Physics Teacher of the Year Award 2025

Congratulations to our Curriculum Lead for Physics and GCSE Combined Science, Susan Mighall, who has been awarded Physics Teacher of the Year Award 2025, by the Institute of Physics.
This is in recognition of her work in growing the number of girls taking A level Physics in Rugby High School and in the wider Midlands area, through supporting the professional development of Physics teachers. Susan is an outstanding and inspirational member of the Science department and we are proud of her achievement.
Susan Mighall’s lessons in school push students academically but have fun activities interwoven into them; from using a methane rocket to study the conservation of momentum to using a foil wire and magnet to play music. This high-challenge, low-risk environment, where students are willing to make mistakes and ask questions, has led to excellent results and progression for students in the school, so much so that staff recruitment has been needed to meet the demand for A Level classes.
Susan has organised Year 10 careers events to promote STEM careers, trips to CERN and has devised collaborative ventures with the art/drama department during activities week. She is an exemplary teacher who does not limit herself to teaching students about physics. She teaches them to be physicists, encouraging curious, insightful and enquiring minds.
With colleagues, Susan has been involved in many projects, sharing and developing good practice in Physics teaching. This has included supporting groups of local schools with the Stimulating Physics Network and the Ogden Trust. As senior development lead for STEM, she has given colleagues teaching Physics out-of-specialism in other schools the confidence and tools to deliver Key Stage 3 and 4 Physics topics.
Susan is keen to emphasise the importance of practical work in underpinning theoretical concepts, and demonstrates this with her commitment to extracurricular projects such as CREST Awards and engineering projects. Congratulations Susan!
