Welcome to the PE Department
The vision of the department
Physical Education should provide every individual student access to the knowledge, skills and positive attitudes which are imperative in the promotion of long term physical activity. It is our belief that the provision of physical education should contain a broad but balanced range of physical activities. These activities should be appropriate to the individual needs of students and their varying abilities. Our aim is to give all students, irrespective of their academic or physical ability, the opportunity to discover and develop their physical potential through a balanced, progressive programme of activities. We don’t believe in making a few sports our specialisms, but giving our students experiences in a large variety of sports, in the hope that each individual will discover something they wish to continue beyond their school years.
We now have a brand new sports hall, opened in May 2017 by Gold Medallist Hockey Player Helen Richardson Walsh. This facility allows us to offer an even greater range of sports to our students.
The range of sports we offer in KS3 include;
- Netball Officiating
- Table Tennis
- Gym – Shapes and Flight / Pair and Group balances / Rhythmic Gymnastics
At KS4 we also include activities such as;
- Ultimate Frisbee
This is a really exciting time in the PE department as the school has just been awarded a government grant to have our first ever Sports Hall Built. This is going to have a hugely positive impact on PE lessons, not only for creating more indoor space, but also for being able to introduce Badminton and Trampolining to our curriculum – both of which we are unable to do in our current Gymnasium.
Please see our FROG page for updates on the build.
Outside we are very lucky to have extensive space on our playing fields.
In Autumn – Spring we have 2 Hockey Pitches, Training Grids, 1 Football Pitch and 1 Tag Rugby Pitch.
In the Summer term we have our 400m Track, Cricket Strip and Boundary, as well as 6 Rounders Pitches.
We also have 3 Netball courts and 4 Tennis Courts.
Extra Curricular/Progression Opportunities
Students at Rugby High School have numerous opportunities to take part in competitive and recreational sport. These are mostly ran by our own PE staff but we also have regular opportunities to receive coaching from outside sources.
We are fully involved in all local Rugby town fixtures, leagues and tournaments in a full range of sports, in which we are often very successful.
As well as local fixtures we also compete in the Warwickshire County Cup and English Schools Cup for football. In 2012 the U16 team coached by Miss French played in the final for the County Cup against Avon Valley.
We enter different age groups for county netball competitions.
We compete in the schools cup competition and local town and county competitions for athletics, with many of our athletes being selected to represent the county, and some having been selected in recent years to compete in the National Schools Finals.
We are also heavily involved in the county cricket arena and annually attend a county tournament held at Edgbaston, getting to the final in the U15 age group in 2016.
Trips and Opportunities
We try to run as many trips as we can and are open to adding events to our calendar as and when they arise. Our regular trips that are ran each year include;
Wimbledon – Yr 8
This is a 2 day trip including; tickets into the Championships for one day, sightseeing on the second day, coach travel and overnight stay.
Marle Hall - Yr 9
This is a week long residential trip to the Warwickshire Schools Outdoor Centre in North Wales. The students will experience activities such as, Gorge Walking, Sea Level Traversing, Mountaineering, Mine Walks, Rock Climbing, Bush Craft and Kayaking. It is a fantastic week and one students remember forever when looking back at their time at RHS.
Ski Trip – Yr 8 and 9
This is for one week in February. It is launched when students are in year 7 & 8. The venue changes year on year and is always a fantastic success.
