Shona Whelan’s (Year 13) translated poem of ‘Today', originally written in Armenian, made it all the way to the final longlist of the national Modern Poetry in Translation competition which was  judged by poet and playright, Clare Pollard.  It is to  feature in a pop-up exhibition near St Paul’s cathedral run by the mental health organisation, The Advocacy Project and can also be seen alongside other winning entries at Young Poets Network.

Today

Today the order is to visit the museum,
greet the there-living colours
of all shades -

I want to leave the past and
forge my own future.

Today the task is to read,
to remember the mundane and the common man -

to them I will write poems and
create new ideas

Today my task is to paint,
to measure the work just-so,
to perform the ballet of the brush
before it courts the water.

I am to create a self-portrait:
               an abstraction,
                              a facade.

Today my pleasure is in creating.

Այսօր
Գրեց՝ Լօլա Գունտաքճեան

Այսօր գործս է թանգարան երթալ՝
Բարեւել հոն ապրող գոյները,
լոյսերն ու շուգերը.
մոռնալ անցեալը ու
երեւակայել ապագան։

Այսօր գործս է գիրք կարդալ՝
վերյիշել առօրեան, կեանքը ու հասարակ մարդը.
գրել քերթուածներ ու
ստեղծել նոր գաղափարներ։

Այսօր գործս է ներկել՝
չափել ու կիսել թուղթի էջերը
կատարել վրցինին մենապարը,
նախքան ջուրին հետ սիրաբանութիւնը։

Ինքնանկար մը.
վերացական պատկեր մը.
դիմակ մը.

Այսօր գործս է ստեղծել։
