News from Mr Grady
16th June 2025
Hello everyone!
Our fundraising for the refurbishment of the Gospel Lab continues apace, and now, not only can our parents and students donate through our school payment system, but anyone can donate through our Justgiving Page.
As we have said in previous communications, Emma Gospel was a wonderful colleague and a passionate advocate for Science Education, and refurbishing the Lab that carries her name means a great deal to us here at Rugby High School. A fitting way to continue to honour the huge contribution Emma made to Rugby High School and to the lives of hundreds of students and future scientists!
And speaking of thanking teachers, this Wednesday 18th June is National Thank a Teacher day. Time to take the chance to thank a teacher for those contributions they make to our lives, and for those of us perhaps not at school any more to reflect on the teachers who made a difference to our lives.
This Wednesday I get the chance to personally thank a teacher who made a huge difference to my life both in school and in shaping my ethos and values: Phil Kelly. Phil was my English teacher in year 9, and again in year 12, he directed the first school plays I was involved with in Secondary school, and his sensitive, good-humoured and passionate approach to English teaching is something I still carry with me today. Mr Kelly will be popping into RHS on Wednesday, for a tour of the school, to meet some students and colleagues and give me the chance to say thank you for all he has done.
Whether you’re still attending school, or have long since left – do take the time to think of those teachers that made a difference to you, and if you can, offer your thanks for their help, support and guidance in getting you to where you are today!
I hope you all have a good week,
Stay safe and well,
Mr Grady

£20250 in 2025 Campaign - Thank you!
Thank you so much to everyone who has donated so far to our £20250 in 2025 campaign! Funds raised will be used to transform the Gospel Science Laboratory for our students.
The planned refurbishment will result in an entirely new laboratory full of specialist science equipment, ensuring our students can engage in practical science experiments which bring the subject to life!
This lab is named in honour of our much-loved former head of science, Emma Gospel. In her time at Rugby High School Emma Gospel taught thousands of students in this lab, with commitment and passion, and we are continuing her legacy, inspiring the next generation of future scientists.
Your donation would be a huge contribution to Emma Gospel’s lasting legacy, and our commitment at RHS to the very best experience of science teaching for all our students.
Donations can be made through Parentmail and will be very much appreciated.
Donations can also be made via Just Giving. Please share the Just Giving page with anyone else you know who may wish to contribute!

Year 8 Competition Success - Step into the NHS
Back in March, during National Science Week, our Year 8 students completed research and pieces of work which was entered into the National “Step into the NHS” Competition. The competition was designed to help raise career aspirations and awareness of the breadth of 350 careers available in the NHS by creating job specifications and adverts using their research.
The students spent time researching different roles in the healthcare profession and then made promotional material in the form of posters, videos, presentations and everything else in between. The department was so impressed by the diversity of creativity shown in the entries and clearly, so were the NHS judges!
We are thrilled to announce that Shreya has been announced as the Regional winner. We wish Shreya good luck as she now takes her project to the National final where she will present her project online to a panel of judges. Her winning piece was a creative and innovative piece about a career in dietetics. You can see a few stills from her video above.
Congratulations also go to the following who were all given highly commended awards for our region, which were great entries but didn’t quite win the Regional winner spot:
Selma and Sahasra
Ella and Lily
Hadassah and Ana
Kaiya
Keva
Daria and Iqraa
Congratulations and well done to all the Year 8 students for their entries.

Much Ado about Nothing
On Wednesday, 21st May, our year group, year 10, had the amazing opportunity to go on a trip to the Royal Shakespeare Company to watch "Much Ado About Nothing", which we are currently studying in English for our English Literature GCSE. Seeing the play performed live helped us understand the characters and storyline even further, which enables us to explore the themes of the play further in our lessons. The actors were incredible, and they brought so much energy and humour to the production, which lit up the whole stage and made the audience laugh throughout.
After the show, we got to meet some of the actors and collect their autographs which made the experience even more special. It was a wonderful, sunny day that not only helped to deepen our understanding of the play but also made learning about Shakespeare fun and memorable.

Science Quiz Time
On Monday 9th June a team of Year 12 students joined 18 other school teams from the Midlands at the Foxcroft Science Quiz at Rugby School. It was a brilliantly organised event with fun had by all. A selection of food and drinks provided the energy for the complex Biology and Chemistry anagrams, Physics dingbats, Objects in space round and not to forget, the guess the science object round, which included molecule models, a potometer and even a skull or two of common animals.
A lovely evening of challenge and fun. Thank you to Sophie, Charles, Isabel, Isla, Jasper and Lara for representing the school with such enthusiasm.

What If This Road
What if this road, that has held no surprises
these many years, decided not to go
home after all; what if it could turn
left or right with no more ado
than a kite-tail? What if its tarry skin
were like a long, supple bolt of cloth,
that is shaken and rolled out, and takes
a new shape from the contours beneath?
And if it chose to lay itself down
in a new way, around a blind corner,
across hills you must climb without knowing
what’s on the other side, who would not hanker
to be going, at all risks? Who wants to know
a story’s end, or where a road will go?
