News from Mr Grady
Hello Everyone,
My village sits very close to Birmingham airport, and almost directly under the flight path. Ironically, RHS sits quite under the flight path too - the last time I returned from my brother-in-law's in the Netherlands, I could quite distinctly see the glorious green of our playing fields below, and the slightly less glorious, but certainly iconic cement works in the distance.
Living where I do, one is simply used to hearing a variety of aircraft engines and the different noises they make as they descend and prepare for landing. There is the rasping desperation of the tiny prop planes, and the huge, solid and reassuring rumble of the A380s as they seem to be going far too slow to ever stay in the air.
What one hears now is a relative silence. At this time of year, normally there would be flights perhaps every 15 to 20 minutes, and even with the windows closed, it could feel pretty relentless. It is now disconcerting when there IS a plane. Of course with the silence, or at least, the lack of engine noise, one can hear other things going on. There's still the background noise of the village, but even that is quieter than normal.
With the windows open, one is now able to actually discern the difference in birdsong, and I can actually hear individual insects. People's voices now sound slightly more clearly from the street, and the wind in the trees is not drowned out by the roar of air-transport. It's enough to make one feel quite poetic.
It has actually made me listen more to what's going on around me, as I've not simply homed in on the noise of planes taking off and landing with such regularity.
There are many things our current situation has bought my attention to, but I had never realised just how much was going on in the background if I only stopped to listen! For such a relentless chatterer, this has been quite a revelation!
Stay well and safe,
Best wishes,
Mr Grady
