News from Mr Grady
9th May 2025
Hello everyone!
I know it’s the end of the second week back, but welcome back to this very shorty half term!
Yesterday was of course VE day, and over the weekend, I attended a wonderful event on the street where I live, a street party to celebrate, remember and mark VE day. Several of the people who live on my street are in their late 80s and early 90s and so had actual memories of taking part in the street parties back in May 1945.
Whilst myself and younger people were in quite celebratory mood, there was an interesting melancholy that the older attendees bought with them, and in chatting to one of my neighbours in particular, although they were at pains to say just what a relief VE day was, it was also a reminder of the continued uncertainty of the world around them.
There was still conflict going on, many people were still waiting for loved ones to return from combat, unaware of their safety, and of course, in front of everyone, although at that stage they weren’t to know it was the continued revelations of the worst atrocities of the holocaust, and the changing global picture as the cold war’s roots came out of the peace negotiations at the end of World War Two.
It was, one resident said happy and scary all at the same time. Relief, but trepidation.
As you watch VE celebrations on the news it is pleasing to see the sacrifice of those generations being honoured, and the acknowledgement of how lucky we are to have had such peace in the years following 1945.
I’m aware that I try to avoid too much melancholy or world events in these newsletters, but did feel that I couldn’t let VE day go by unmarked this year.
I hope you all have a good week,
Stay safe and well,
Mr Grady

Remarkable Rugby
Georgia Merrett (Year 12) and Kim Oyugi (Year 13) have dedicated almost every Wednesday lunchtime, since the start of the school year, to run a Touch / Tag Rugby club for our students. They have been such a positive inspiration to the younger years and have made sessions fun and active, whilst focussing on skill and strategy. We would like to really show my appreciation to them for promoting this sport and giving up their time to help progress others.
As we go into the Summer term our extra-curricular sports will now change....but Georgia has already said she is still prepared to keep the club going - (Kim will be busy sitting her A Levels and we wish her all the luck and success in these). So, for anyone else that would like to come along and join the club - Wednesday lunchtimes 1-1.40pm.

Match report against Rugby Free School: U13s Rugby High School 1 (Anya) - 6 Rugby Free School
Despite a great supply of 'fresh legs' for this game, with our record squad of 14 players, Rugby Free had the edge and won convincingly by six goals to one. We were 2-0 down by half time, but started the second half with an excellent goal from Anya. However, despite consistent hard work from our players, Rugby Free scored another four goals (one a penalty) and we were not able to get any more of our shots past their goal keeper, despite some great runs from all of our forwards. At the end of the game, Rugby Free chose Efe and Melisa as joint players of the match. We kept our spirits up until the end, still trying to get another goal right until the final whistle. Great determination on display again, and we'd like to thank our sixth form team of officials, Rosie (ref) and Charles and Jess (linos), who did a great job and made some difficult decisions.

Match report against Houlton: U13s Rugby High School 2 (Caoimhe, Efe) - 5 Houlton
Photo caption l-r standing, Anushay P, Holly S, Eva L (C), Eva SB, Anya H, McKayla O, Riya S, Sophie M, Zoe C. L-r kneeling, Ella J, Rohitha R, Melisa B, Efe A, Caoimhe A.
Another beautiful sunny afternoon for the final game in our East Warwickshire competition, but victory was not be ours, despite leading the scoring with a goal from Caoimhe, following a corner from Eva SB. Houlton quickly restored the balance, and we were losing by half time. The second half continued in a similar way but we did have a glorious goal from Efe following another epic run and it was very well deserved! We had another big squad with many subs, but we couldn't redress the balance in time. Huge thanks to our fabulous year 9 team of officials, with Anushay on the line and Zoe making her refereeing debut. Caoimhe was rightfully named player of the match by Houlton, a testament to her hard work both on and off the pitch! Dr Brown and Mr Phillips felt proud of our squad, who again battled to the end, and proud too of the older students this season who have stepped up, and stepped out their comfort zones to officiate at the interschool matches, they are a credit to the RHS community.

Spotlight on a Science Technician
We’d like to highlight the wonderful Science technicians we have at Rugby High School. They work so hard behind the scenes ensuring our Science lessons are resourced with safe, interesting and exciting practicals and demonstrations. In this issue our highlighted technician is Senior Science Technician, Mr Broderick!
1. When did you join Rugby High School and how did you get into the role of Science Technician?
I joined Rugby High School as a Biology Technician in 2014 having just completed a degree in Marine Biology and not quite sure what I wanted to do next. I then took over as a Senior Science Technician in 2021 taking on the role of Chemistry Technician as well.
2. What various jobs do you do in your role?
Preparing and delivering practical lessons, washing up used glassware, stock taking and ordering chemicals, washing up, making and fixing equipment, washing up, maintaining labs, disposing of waste chemicals, washing up, organising the photocopying of worksheets and many other tasks to support the smooth running of the science department.
3. Describe what a typical day might be like?
There isn’t really any such thing as a typical day in this job, as it can vary so much day to day. I am responsible for the upkeep of two of the labs and for 60 lessons per week but some weeks only a few practicals may be ordered, whilst other weeks every one of these lessons may need a practical prepared for it. When there are fewer practical lessons to prepare we are able to spend more of our time doing other important tasks that often get put on the backburner during busier periods. Routine tasks are often also interspersed with first aid calls or troubleshooting technical issues in labs.
4. Do you receive ongoing training and if so, what?
I have done various training courses over the years including Microbiology, Microscope Maintenance and Health & Safety. I am also trained as a First Aider. Most of our ongoing training is gained through sharing of expertise with other technicians either at this school or within the local technician group that I have been spearheading for the last few years. We also hone our expertise through messing around careful experimentation with apparatus.
5. What is your favourite part of your job?
I love the practical side of things; finding new and better ways to run experiments, building and fixing kit, making improvements to labs and general problem-solving. I do tend to take it personally when experiments don’t behave in the way we would like but enjoy finding ways to make sure they do work as expected next time. I am less enthusiastic about the washing up and administrative tasks.

A.F. Harrold
In The Tree's Defence
Trees are good at what they do,
at being oak or beech or yew.
They shake their leaves to make a breeze
and pop out blossom for the bees.
In crook of branch they’ll hold a nest
which, birds concur, is for the best.
On rainy days they shield the feller
who’s forgot his umbrella.
In summer they provide the shade
for picnickers out in the glade.
Inside their sturdy hearts of wood
trees are simply doing good.
