News from Mr Grady

Friday 23rd October 2026

Hello everyone,

What a very long half term this feels like it’s been!  I am sure that everyone is ready for a good rest and a break!

It’s lovely to see that our year 7 and our new year 12s have settled in so well.

This week, despite us all being a bit tired and ready for a holiday, we had Business Enterprise day for years 7-10, and, of course, Pink day on Friday.  I’m sure there’ll be photos aplenty circulating of both.

The enterprise day was an incredibly effective day, where students were learning, understanding and deploying core skills of enterprise across the day, ably supported by their form tutors and a range of staff – and led by Mr Cox, Head of Business and Economics.  It is very rare on any “whole school day” that every student I speak to says they’re having a purposeful and enjoyable time, but that is exactly what happened yesterday.  Students were eager, not just when asked, but to seek me out to include me in presentations, ask advice, or simply tell me what a great day they were having – what a wonderful experience.

I even appeared in a couple of marketing videos, by request.  My agent will of course be in touch with the students to let them know what my appearance fee will be.

A wonderful day!

And of course Friday is Pink day – where we all wear as much pink as possible for Breast Cancer Awareness, and raise money for the charity in any number of ways.

I have dusted off my pink vest and tie in eager anticipation.

Thank you to all students, colleagues and students’ families for their contributions to the last half term – a brilliant start to the academic year 2026-27, and I look forward to seeing you all next half term!

In the meantime, stay well and safe everyone,

Best wishes,
Mr Grady

Book Buzz

Last week our Year 7 students were excited to receive their Book Buzz books, generously funded by our PTA!

Titles included 'Birdie', 'Lessons in Death', 'Cringe Club' and 'A Dog called Hero.' Once they've read their new book, students will write a short review and then be encouraged to borrow a friend's book to read as well! If they read 3 books and write their comments about them, they will be rewarded with 10 house points.

Happy reading everyone!

Black History Month

This week we have had special assemblies hosted by some of our students in celebration of Black History month. They created presentations to share information about countries including Jamaica, Zimbabwe and Nigeria, African and Caribbean food, music, hairstyles, historical figures and more! Thank you and well done to all the students who helped present the assemblies!

And yesterday, the canteen created a special menu for Black History month with jollof rice and a Caribbean chicken curry on offer!

Pink Day

Today in school we wore it pink and raised money to help make life-changing cancer research and vital support happen. We celebrate Pink Day every year with donations going to Cancer Research UK. School was a sea of fuschias and rose, hot pink and flamingo (literally!) Tutus and pink wigs abounded and some impressive costumes appeared, from fluffy sharks to pink pigs to fairies with wings.

Last year, the PTA paid out over £5000 for extra-curricular “bids” from the school and the 200 Club is a big part of that fundraising! Some examples of things the PTA have supported have been the Digital Theatre Plus resource, support for the Curriculum Enhancement Week (the activities in the last week of the school year) and many more.

If you’d like to be involved, click on the link or scan the QR code above for an online form. If you’d rather have a printable form, please request one from me at the email below. Steel Band opportunities

Our Music Department has donated our old steel pans to The Ocho Rios Steel Band, a long-established steel band in Rugby. The pans needed tuning and a good new home and ex-RHS student and steel band member, Lisa De Winter, pledged to use them to set up new classes for beginners to steel pans. Lisa had them tuned at her own expense, and is now ready to recruit learners!

The Ocho Rios Steel Band is a registered charity and operates fully not-for-profit and is now offering a beginners’ boot camp - for both youngsters and adults!

Lisa De Winter said: “The band are hugely excited to now be able to make playing steel pans accessible to everyone in Rugby again. RHS's wonderful gesture of donating their pans, (which have now all be re-tuned) has meant we have a much wider variety for learners to play and has really boosted the project!”

The boot camp is a 4-week course taking place on Tuesdays, starting on 10th November. There are two sessions per evening; you can either attend either 6pm - 7pm or 7.15pm - 8.15pm. For full information on beginners' classes for all ages please contact ochoriosband@outlook.com or visit The Ocho Rios Steel Band, Rugby on Facebook:  www.facebook.com/groups/httpswww.youtube.comtheochoriossteelband

Rosa
Rita Dove

How she sat there,
the time right inside a place
so wrong it was ready.

That trim name with
its dream of a bench
to rest on. Her sensible coat.

Doing nothing was the doing:
the clean flame of her gaze
carved by a camera flash.

How she stood up
when they bent down to retrieve
her purse. That courtesy.
