News from Mr Grady

Tuesday 29th September 2026

Hello everyone,

And I’m writing to you still awash with the euphoria of another wonderful Cultural Day.

Hopefully you’ll have already seen some of our pictures of the celebration of the diversity of our community – both the wonderful cakes baked to celebrate European Day of Languages, and also the many, many pictures of our students on Friday last week celebrating cultural day.

It has become such a staple part of our calendar, and it is one of my favourite days of the year – when we celebrate all the different cultures and backgrounds of the wonderful RHS community.  Our Diversity prefects did a wonderful job, under the watchful eye of Mrs Hutton in organising the event – including the amazing performances in the hall and the gym.

Each year it feels like the day evolves and develops in one way or another, and this year saw several performances that were a fusion, or as I think the young people say: “mash up,” of different musical, dance or cultural styles - something driven by the students, and such a wonderful thing to see.

Both Mrs Grimes and myself were quite choked up by the performances, showing as they did, the very best of us and our community.

I visit a number of schools across the year, and can honestly say I have not seen a day like it in other school’s calendars – the independence with which we treat our students, the conviction with which they take to the stage, and the joy they all get from the chance to discuss each others’ backgrounds and cultures makes it the most wonderful experience.

I’m already looking forward to next year!

In the meantime, stay well and safe everyone,

Best wishes,
Mr Grady

Lauren Henry brings inspiration to Rugby High students

Last week, we were thrilled to welcome back Lauren Henry, MBE, a former RHS student, recently crowned World Champion and gold-medal winning Olympian rower!

Lauren is the inspiration behind the recent name change of our H house, which has been named Henry house in her honour.

Lauren made history in August this year, powering through to win the women’s single sculls title, becoming the first British woman ever to claim World Championships gold in the event.

After a Henry House photoshoot, Lauren gave 3 special assemblies to all years. We shared clips of the powerful finish to her recent World Championship rowing race, where she won Gold, and of the nail-biting finish to the Olympic quadruple sculls race where she won Olympic Gold with her 3 crewmates, in Paris in 2024.

Lauren was then quizzed by staff and students about her recent success and the change from racing in a quad to single sculls, where she feels comfortable and confident. She discussed her intensive training regime, her time at RHS and even how to keep her boat going straight and not wonky! Lauren talked about the importance of resilience, trusting that she is good enough and how she tackles pre-race nerves.

Thank you to Lauren for a fantastic afternoon, giving insight and inspiration to Rugby High students!

European Day of Languages

We celebrated European Day of Languages last week on Thursday 24th September. Students were invited to take part in the Great European Bake-off by making a European-themed cake or fairy cake! As always, we were impressed by the level of creativity!

Judging of the Bake off was held at break and the tension and excitement built as we awaited the panel's decisions. Judging was particularly tricky as there was a huge range of creative and colourful cakes!

Congratulations to everyone who took part! Highly commended were:

Alice with her Swiss cheese and mouse cake, Leonie with her European flag cupcakes, Clara with her German flag cake, Holly and fellow Year 9s for their Italian food cake, Shiloh for her flags cake and Ema with her Basque cheesecake. And the three winners were Katie for her map cake, Alexis for her Greek cake and Ivy-Lin for her spaghetti and meatballs cake.

Students should also check out the European Day of Languages Teacher Top of the Pops display, which is still in the foyer and to play 'Match the teacher to the song.' House points for taking part and prizes for the winners!

Cultural Diversity Day

Last Friday in school we celebrated Cultural Diversity Day and the school was filled with colour, as students dressed in cultural clothes or the colours of their flag. This celebratory day has grown and grown over recent years and its popularity is a sign of the great strength of our Rugby High community.

There was a fantastic turnout in the hall and the gym at lunch, for an array of wonderful performances, with singing, dancing, poetry and musical pieces. Performers were clapped and cheered on with enthusiasm! Well done to everyone who took part! Enjoy the display of photos in the entrance hall area!

Here at Rugby High we celebrate inclusion and acceptance; everyone should feel welcome, valued and have their voice heard! This encourages everyone to feel able to contribute to our community, promoting fairness by removing barriers.

Leave of absence during term time: Updated information for parents

The Supreme Court has clarified the law on unauthorised leave, including holidays, during term time (Platt v Isle of Wright 2017). The Supreme Court has made clear that attending school ‘regularly’ means that the children must attend school on every day that they are required to do so. As such, the parents of any child who is absent from school without authorisation for any length of time are likely to be considered as committing an offence under s444 of the Education Act 1996.

The law states a leave of absence may only be granted by a school if an application is made in advance and if it considers there are exceptional circumstances relating to the application.

Schools must judge each application individually considering the specific facts and circumstances and relevant background context behind each request.

A leave of absence is granted entirely at the school’s discretion. Generally, a need or desire for a holiday or other absence for the purpose of leisure and recreation would not constitute an exceptional circumstance.

Where a leave of absence is granted, the school will determine the number of days a pupil can be absent from school.

When making an application for Leave of Absence parents are advised to give sufficient information and time to allow the Head teacher the opportunity to consider all the exceptional circumstances and to notify parents of their decision.  The school may also request further information on the application and supporting documentation where appropriate.

It is advised that if the resident parent has not received notification or a response regarding the leave of absence application, it is the parents’ responsibility to ascertain if the leave is authorised prior to the start of the leave.

The school can only consider Leave of Absence requests which are made by the ‘resident’ parent i.e. the parent with whom the child normally resides.

Where applications for leave of absence are made in advance and refused, the child is expected to be in school on the dates set out in the application. If the child is absent during that period, it will be recorded as an unauthorised absence.  Where a leave of absence is requested, but additional days taken either prior to or after the request may be considered as part of the leave of absence.

Leave of Absences which are not made in advance cannot be authorised in line with legislation.  This will result in the absence being recorded as ‘unauthorised’.

All matters of unauthorised absence relating to a Leave of Absence will be referred to the Warwickshire Attendance Service, part of Warwickshire County Council.  Penalty Notices are issued in accordance with Warwickshire County Council’s Code of Conduct for Penalty Notices and in the first instance, as an alternative to prosecution proceedings.

The law relating to Penalty Notices changed with effect from 19th August 2024. Therefore, Penalty Notices issued for Leave of Absence taken from September 2024 will be issued in accordance with the updated legislation.

  • Penalty Notices are issued to each parent of each absent child, (for example 2 children and 2 parents, means each parent will receive 2 invoices – 4 in total).
    • First Leave of Absence offence:  The Penalty Notice amount of £160 to be paid within 28 days, this is reduced to £80 each child if paid within 21 days.
    • Second Leave of Absence offence within a 3 year period (from the date of issue of the first penalty notice): The amount of £160 paid within 28 days.  No reduced amount.
  • Payment plans will not be offered and/or payments received outside of the 28 day period will not be accepted. Where a penalty notice expires unpaid the matter will be referred to Warwickshire County Council’s Legal Services to consider criminal prosecution.
  • Third Leave of Absence offence within a 3 year period (from the date of issue of the first penalty notice):  A penalty notices will be not be issued and the matter will be referred to Warwickshire County Council’s Legal Services to consider instigating criminal prosecution proceedings under S444 of Education Act 1996.

Your child’s progress academically, as well as socially, is our shared priority.

Keep a Poem in Your Pocket
Beatrice Schenk de Regniers

Keep a poem in your pocket
and a picture in your head
and you’ll never feel lonely
at night when you’re in bed.

The little poem will sing to you
the little picture bring to you
a dozen dreams to dance to you
at night when you’re in bed.

So –
Keep a poem in your pocket
and a picture in your head
and you’ll never feel lonely
at night when you’re in bed.
