News from Mr Grady

Thursday 18th June 2026

Hello everyone,

Well, I hope you have your flags at the ready, and are all prepared to roar support for superb athletes as they compete in front of our very eyes.  No, of course, I’m not talking about the World Cup – you don’t need a non-football fan trying to make insightful comments about Thomas Tuchel’s back four, when the writer, in this case, has only ever heard the phrase used by proper football fans and couldn’t realistically describe what it actually meant.

No, I mean tomorrow is SPORTS DAY! One of the most enjoyable days of the year – this year moved to Sports morning for a variety of reasons, and hopefully, as the day gets hotter, it means we’ll have covered all the big races before the sun gets too strong.

What’s great about Sports Day is that everyone gets involved, all the staff are out managing events, students are wonderful in their support of everyone competing – and although there’s good, healthy competition, we all know it is the taking part that counts, and I am as happy to see one of our new year 7 students really having a go at Discus, even if it’s only one of the first times they’ve tried, as I am to see county athletes making the 800 metres look like a stroll in the park.

There is, of course, the joy of the staff relay, which I feel my 49-year-old muscles will not thank me for.

There are few schools where you’d send all 600 of us out to the field, and trust that the day will be a positive and well-supported one, and It always makes me so proud that we do this whole-school event with such ease and expectation of support and fair play.

As ever, huge thanks to Ms Wallace and the PE department, and all the sports leaders who make the event happen, and all the staff who will be out measuring, counting and timing tomorrow.

Hurrah for this wonderful Summer-term event, and whatever house you’re competing for, enjoy the day, the atmosphere and the medals!

Stay well and safe everyone,

All best wishes,

Mr Grady

History comes to life at the Black Country Living Museum

On Thursday 21st May, Year 8 travelled to Dudley in order to visit the wonderful Black Country Living Museum. The students were divided into groups and enjoyed a range of activities which included touring the museum’s exhibitions, experiencing an “Edwardian school lesson”, finding out about the workings of an Industrial mine and (most importantly) getting the chance to taste proper Black Country chips! The trip complemented the students’ previous work on the Industrial Revolution and allowed for the lessons to be brought to life. The students were all wonderfully behaved (especially during the school lesson) and were a credit to the school.

Geographers’ field trip to Carding Mill Valley

54 adventurous year 10 students headed to Carding Mill Valley last week, as part of their physical field work element of their GCSE Geography course. The students were investigating how stream characteristics and flood risk change as we move down river. They measured what the river and valley is like in 3 different locations. The rainy and windy weather didn’t stop us and some great sploshing about occurred ??. Mrs Holland also had a few minutes to create this wonderful painting sketch of the upper course of the river. It shows just what a beautiful location CMV is!

A "Big Bang" for Year 7

On Thursday 11th June, 44 of our Year 7 students, along with their Science teachers, headed to the NEC in Birmingham to visit the BIg Bang. The Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair is a national event aimed at young students.  After a short picnic lunch on arrival, students headed into the exhibition to discover hands-on workshops, activities and exciting live shows.

Students enjoyed visiting a variety of stalls with exhibitors from Engineering and Nuclear Power to Geology and a zoolab show. The students enjoyed the challenge of finding lots of different and interesting stands and we were treated to an assorted display of freebies that they collected, such as surgical gloves, pencils and a lot of stickers! As ever, the Rugby High students got out there, got involved and enjoyed a fantastic time learning about the many different ways STEM is used. We will certainly be back next year!

Science Quiz Time!

On Monday 8th June a team of Year 12 students joined 18 other school teams from the Midlands at the Foxcroft Science Quiz at Rugby School. It was a brilliantly organised event with fun had by all.   A selection of food and drinks provided the energy for the complex Biology and Chemistry anagrams, organic Chemistry, Objects in space round and not to forget, the guess the science object round which included molecule models, a potometer and even a skull or two of common animals.

A lovely evening of challenge and fun. Thank you to Ollie, Tanishka, Emily, Chloe, Matilda and Ruby for representing the school with such enthusiasm.

Poetry By Heart achievements

We are delighted to report another triumphant year for RHS in the prestigious national Poetry By Heart poetry recitation competition!

Liv Bexon-Walsh in year 10 recited sensitively and with such mature comprehension and composure and was judged Best In Warwickshire in the Key Stage Four competition: we are very proud of you, Liv!

Sorcha Moore in year 12 delivered intelligent, nuanced recitations and was judged as a national finalist for the Key Stage Five competition! Sorcha will now attend the finalists' event at The Globe Theatre in London in early July where she will recite again - on The Globe's stage! - in front of an audience of other young reciters, parents, teachers and esteemed judges. This is a magnificent achievement and one of which Sorcha and her family should be rightly proud - as we are.

These achievements are a testimony to our students' creativity and curiosity and also their courage - and the fact that they are prepared to go above and beyond what is expected of them and sparkle! This also reflects the carefully nurtured creativity and love of poetry fostered by the English department and Mrs. D.B., our accomplished, published poet and long-time leader of the fantastic RHS creative writing group. Well done, all.

Former Student's talk

On Monday 8th June, Year 12 Physicists were treated to a visit from Alice Cartridge who completed her A-levels here in 2021.  She provided an enthusiastic and insightful talk about her time studying her 4-year integrated Physics degree at Liverpool University and now her time working on her PhD based at Cambridge University and CERN.

With many of the Year 12 students heading off to Geneva in a few week’s time to visit the biggest particle Physics laboratory in the world, her explanations of the fundamentals of Particle Physics not only whetted their appetite, but her advice on future study was also very useful as many students are now starting to consider their options for study after leaving school.

Psychology Olympiad success

We are very proud to announce that Anna Seago, Year 12, achieved the Silver Award in a global Psychology Olympiad competition! The competition contained 3 rounds designed to assess Anna's skills, intelligence, and tenacity. Anna has provided a short statement about her experience:

"I recently took part in the Psychology Olympiad, a global online competition for students with an interest in psychology from Year 9 to Year 12. The Olympiad consists of three rounds: a multiple-choice round, a short-answer round, and a final essay. I progressed through all three rounds and achieved a Silver Award, which is awarded to the top 10-30% of finalists. I really enjoyed the experience and found it rewarding, as it allowed me to explore areas of psychology I otherwise wouldn't have and develop my understanding of the subject. I would really recommend this for anyone who is interested in psychology!" Well done, Anna!

Successful Football Team selection

Rugby Football logoKosi Aiguomudu, in Year 7, has been selected to represent the Rugby Schools' U13 District Football team in 2026/27 following successful trials recently. In her trials, Kosi demonstrated great technical ability, determination and behaved impeccably; she was a credit to Rugby High school and the team are excited for her joining them.

What is Atom Home?

How do families sign up?

Big Future

Dame Rachel de Souza, Children’s Commissioner for England, has launched a survey to find out how to make life better for children.

In launching it, she has said “For the first time, hundreds of thousands of children will be eligible to vote in the next general election at age 16, the biggest change to the franchise in half a century – yet just one in five children say politicians listen to them. That’s why I’m doing my final survey, The Big Future, to talk to a million children, to listen to them. And to find out about what it’s like to be a child today. I am asking children about the changes they want to see in their communities, their biggest concerns, and their hopes for the future. More than anything, I want to know what they think a good childhood should look like, now and in the future.”

How can children and young people can take part?

The survey is open now. Go to: www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/TheBigFuture/

James Reeves
Mr Kartoffel

Mr Kartoffel's a whimsical man;
He drinks his beer from a watering-can,
And for no good reason that I can see
He fills his pockets with china tea.
He parts his hair with a knife and fork
And takes his ducks on a Sunday walk.
Says he, "If my wife and I should choose
To wear our stockings outside our shoes,
Plant tulip bulbs in the baby's pram
And eat tobacco instead of jam,
And fill the bath with cauliflowers,
That's nobody's business at all but ours."
Says Mrs. K., "I may choose to travel
With a sack of grass or a sack of gravel,
Or paint my toes, one black, one white,
Or sit on a bird's nest half the night —
But whatever I do that is rum or rare,
I rather think that is my affair.
So fill up your pockets with stamps and string,
And let us be ready for anything!"
Says Mr. K. to his whimsical wife,
"How can we face the storms of life,
Unless we are ready for anything?
So if you've provided the stamps and the string,
Let us pump up the saddle and harness the horse
And fill him with carrots and custard and sauce,
Let us leap on him lightly and give him a shove
And it's over the sea and away, my love!"
