Rugby High School - Summer Term 2026 Issue 12

{item_alt_tag}

News from Mr Grady

Friday 1st May 2026

Hello everyone,

This week, we have our Celebration Breakfast with year 11, ahead of formal exams starting next week, and in the coming days, our year 13 Red Carpet event as we wave them off on their exam-study leave.

It marks the time of year when the school becomes, in addition to all the other things we do, an official “Exam Centre” and the signs will be up around the school – “Silence – Exams in progress.”

It’s a curious time of year, as for year 11 and 13 it marks the end of their courses, and the start of their next steps – the tension and excitement of being prepared for the exams and wanting to do the very best they can.

For the rest of the school, it will feel curiously emptier, and a little more quiet, as nearly 300 hundred students are now off-site at different times, or tucked away in exam halls.

The first few exams always have a mix of tense expectation, the buzz of discussion around what might come up on the paper, and the calming input of our exam invigilators and quiet, good-humoured authority of our wonderful Exams Officer – Mrs Wallace.  This gives way, once the exam season is in full flow to the mundanity of arrival times, exit times and the fact that our students will be sick of writing their name, candidate number and centre number by the end of the first week.

I’m sure we all remember what it is to sit in an exam hall, scribbling furiously, the silence punctured by the riffling and turning of pages, the soft tread of the invigilators, and the constant checking of the time - are you managing it - have you left enough time for the “big question at the end of the paper?”

It’s a rite of passage for our year 11 and 13 students, and really, after all the talking and the preparations, I’m sure they just want to get going with them and stop talking about them!

I know the whole community wishes them well in the coming weeks. They’ve been superbly prepared by our staff here, and will be looked after throughout the exam season - and then - the joy! Probably the longest summer break they’ll ever have!

Stay well and safe everyone,

Best wishes,
Mr Grady

School Houses

This week, students and staff have been proposing new names for our current houses as well as proposing a new letter and name for our new house. We are increasing our number of houses to 5 as, from September this year, we will have an extra 30 students joining Year 7! This has prompted a review of the current house names, with students able to suggest new people we can name our houses after. They can also vote to keep the current house name.

Our house names are representative of women who have or have had a significant positive impact on society. They embody the ethos and values of our school and our school vision. These are outstanding, inspirational role models, for the work that they do or have done.  These names reflect and represent the diversity of our school community.

We look forward to hearing everyones' suggestions and choosing our house names!

Battle of the Bands

Battle of the Bands was an epic night this week with brilliant performances from all 6 bands from Rugby High, Ashlawn and Lawrence Sheriff! We had original songs showcased, impressive covers and a wealth of musical talent on display!

Each band took to the stage to perform 2 songs with judges' feedback after each. The judges were impressed with all the acts and also how new some of the bands were, as some hadn't been playing together very long but put on excellent performances.

Our audience was treated to fantastic renditions of songs by Franz Ferdinand, Green Day, the Cranberries and more and some classic rock anthems like 'We will rock you.'

Congratulations to our worthy winners from Lawrence Sheriff, Solid Gold Vengeance, who owned the stage with their rockstar vibe! Well done to all the bands for singing and playing your hearts out. And thanks to everyone who came along and to the staff and PTA for organising such a great event!

Football Shirt Friday

Last Friday was Football Shirt Friday! This is a great annual charity event at Rugby High, raising money and awareness for bowel cancer. Students came to school in their favourite football top, and this year the Sixth Form organised a friendly football match, which was a great success. Many students came out to watch and support - and the wellbeing prefects even supplied blankets for those who wanted to make a picnic out of the occasion!

Chemistry Olympiads

Our Year 12s students recently entered the 58th annual chemistry Olympiad and last week received their certificates! This is open to all secondary schools and colleges in the British Isles and is set by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The competition is designed to challenge and develop critical problem-solving skills, help students learn to think more creatively, and allow students to test their chemistry knowledge in real-world situations.

A massive well done to all the students who took part in this challenge!

Leave of absence during term time: Updated information for parents

The Supreme Court has clarified the law on unauthorised leave, including holidays, during term time (Platt v Isle of Wright 2017). The Supreme Court has made clear that attending school ‘regularly’ means that the children must attend school on every day that they are required to do so. As such, the parents of any child who is absent from school without authorisation for any length of time are likely to be considered as committing an offence under s444 of the Education Act 1996.

The law states a leave of absence may only be granted by a school if an application is made in advance and if it considers there are exceptional circumstances relating to the application.

Schools must judge each application individually considering the specific facts and circumstances and relevant background context behind each request.

A leave of absence is granted entirely at the school’s discretion. Generally, a need or desire for a holiday or other absence for the purpose of leisure and recreation would not constitute an exceptional circumstance.

Where a leave of absence is granted, the school will determine the number of days a pupil can be absent from school.

When making an application for Leave of Absence parents are advised to give sufficient information and time to allow the Head teacher the opportunity to consider all the exceptional circumstances and to notify parents of their decision.  The school may also request further information on the application and supporting documentation where appropriate.

It is advised that if the resident parent has not received notification or a response regarding the leave of absence application, it is the parents’ responsibility to ascertain if the leave is authorised prior to the start of the leave.

The school can only consider Leave of Absence requests which are made by the ‘resident’ parent i.e. the parent with whom the child normally resides.

Where applications for leave of absence are made in advance and refused, the child is expected to be in school on the dates set out in the application. If the child is absent during that period, it will be recorded as an unauthorised absence.  Where a leave of absence is requested, but additional days taken either prior to or after the request may be considered as part of the leave of absence.

Leave of Absences which are not made in advance cannot be authorised in line with legislation.  This will result in the absence being recorded as ‘unauthorised’.

All matters of unauthorised absence relating to a Leave of Absence will be referred to the Warwickshire Attendance Service, part of Warwickshire County Council.  Penalty Notices are issued in accordance with Warwickshire County Council’s Code of Conduct for Penalty Notices and in the first instance, as an alternative to prosecution proceedings.

The law relating to Penalty Notices changed with effect from 19 August 2024. Therefore, Penalty Notices issued for Leave of Absence taken from September 2024 will be issued in accordance with the updated legislation.

  • Penalty Notices are issued to each parent of each absent child, (for example 2 children and 2 parents, means each parent will receive 2 invoices – 4 in total).
    • First Leave of Absence offence:  The Penalty Notice amount of £160 to be paid within 28 days, this is reduced to £80 each child if paid within 21 days.
    • Second Leave of Absence offence within a 3 year period (from the date of issue of the first penalty notice): The amount of £160 paid within 28 days.  No reduced amount.
  • Payment plans will not be offered and/or payments received outside of the 28 day period will not be accepted. Where a penalty notice expires unpaid the matter will be referred to Warwickshire County Council’s Legal Services to consider criminal prosecution.
  • Third Leave of Absence offence within a 3 year period (from the date of issue of the first penalty notice):  A penalty notices will be not be issued and the matter will be referred to Warwickshire County Council’s Legal Services to consider instigating criminal prosecution proceedings under S444 of Education Act 1996.

Your child’s progress academically as well as socially is our shared priority.

Loveliest of trees, the cherry now

Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.

Now, of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more.

And since to look at things in bloom
Fifty springs are little room,
About the woodlands I will go
To see the cherry hung with snow.
