News from Mr Grady

Thursday 15th January 2026

Hello everyone, and a happy new year to you!

I hope the Christmas break was a refreshing one. It feels a long time ago now, with a snow day under our belt for the year.

This week, we have the joy of the school production – Teechers, by John Godber.  I am told, by several cast members, that it is very funny, and perhaps even a little bit rude. I shall look forward to both aspects enormously (I am going to see it tonight!)

As a Drama teecher at heart, I always love the buzz of the school production, the sense of working as an ensemble, and the chance to see our students in an entirely different light to the way we see them during the day.

It is always a pleasure to see them own the stage, and make the material their own, building character, setting and atmosphere and all in all having a whale of a time. I miss the rehearsals, and those final few days where you wonder will it ever be ready? (it always is) And what if things go wrong? (They always do, but somehow everyone makes it work!)

I can honestly say that it was in being part of the school band, and then proceeding to working on stage and then directing that I knew I’d “found my tribe.” Even at the age of 16, the stage, the rehearsal room and the collaborative nature of working with different people to achieve something greater than all of us, felt like home.

I hope our students (some veterans of school productions, and some newly inducted) enjoy the next two nights, holding the audience rapt, making us laugh, think and challenging us to reflect. It is a privilege to take to the stage and say “for the next couple of hours, we’re going to entertain you.” It takes courage, confidence, and commitment to do so, and I wish everyone involved, including the wonderful Mrs D’Souza, Mrs Sabin and Mr Tarry the very best of runs, and as Mr Basford might be heard yelling:  “Right everybody, Hands on heads and fingers on lips…”

Stay safe and well everyone!

Best wishes,
Mr Grady

'Teechers' performances tonight and tomorrow

Our fantastic school production is being performed this week, and you can still get tickets to watch the performance tonight or tomorrow!

This year's play is 'Teechers' by John  Godber. Meet Gail, Hobby and Salty - three year 11 students about to leave their school days behind them. As their final term nears its end, the trio perform a play inspired by the chaotic first days of their idealistic drama teacher.

What follows is a funny, fast moving, hard-hitting account of life at their school, as they play staff, students and site premises managers, including the drama teacher who helped get them into drama and changed their lives.

The last two performances are on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th January, curtains up at 7pm. Tickets are £4 each and are available through Parentmail or on the door!

Gold Industrial Cadets progress their projects

Our Gold Industrial Cadets visited the University of Birmingham in December, as part of their engineering project. Chloe W shares her experience of the trip: "On Tuesday and Wednesday we went to Birmingham University for a workshop to use the Maker Space in the new Engineering department for our Gold Industrial Cadets project. We got to see our designs that had been 3D printed - and then destroy them to test their strengths!"

"The folks at Birmingham were lovely and extremely helpful and knowledgeable when we had questions or requests. We met their robot dog, Spot, and visited the Birmingham Christmas market on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, we had a brief tour of the university and saw some of their cars designed by the students for the Formula Student races. Overall it was a great experience and we made a lot of progress on our project."

Inspirational A Level PE trip

In December, our A Level PE students visited the University of Birmingham. They had three different sessions where they learnt about lung function and how to diagnose airway obstructions, the wide range of physiotherapy specialisms and pathways to follow, then they tested several areas of their own fitness, including strength, power and co-ordination. A really interesting day, providing much to think about for their academic journeys beyond RHS!

Dream Start to the Netball League

Squad: Leela Devgun, Sophia Khan, Jaya Grewat, Kosi Aiguomudu, Chika Isimite, Chimnoya Amatobi, Amber Takhar, Helena Lasota and Saki Chandler

Our Year 7 Netball squad had their very first match on Tuesday 13th February, and boy did they come out with fire in their bellies! They had control of the game from the very beginning, stopping Avon Valley scoring a single goal in the first quarter, and only scoring 1 goal against us in the whole first half. The way the team had remembered tactics we'd been working on before Christmas was so brilliant to see, alongside really strong core skills. The attack stayed back in their half and gave the defence room to dominate centre court and bring the ball to them, then we shot with confidence and fought for any rebounds. At the end, the Avon Valley teacher said "Wow, you've got a good team there, so well-drilled". Really proud of them, and a really promising start to their league.

Result: Rugby High 20 - Avon Valley 4

The Garden Year

January brings the snow,
makes our feet and fingers glow.

February brings the rain,
Thaws the frozen lake again.

March brings breezes loud and shrill,
stirs the dancing daffodil.

April brings the primrose sweet,
Scatters daisies at our feet.

May brings flocks of pretty lambs,
Skipping by their fleecy dams.

June brings tulips, lilies, roses,
Fills the children's hand with posies.

Hot July brings cooling showers,
Apricots and gillyflowers.

August brings the sheaves of corn,
Then the Harvest home is borne.

Warm September brings the fruit,
Sportsmen then begin to shoot.

Fresh October brings the pheasant;
Then to gather nuts is pleasant.

Dull November brings the blast,
Then the leaves are falling fast.

Chill December brings the sleet,
Blazing fire and Christmas treat.
