News from Mr Grady

18th September 2025

Hello everyone!

And welcome back to RHS for the academic year of 2025-26.

For all sorts of reasons, it’s been a busy start to the term, and I hope that this third week of the term is starting to feeling a little more “back to normal” for years 8-11 and 13, and settled for our new year 7 and 12 students.

As we’ve shared widely in the press and in our own social media - our A-Level and GCSE results were superb this year – a testament to the professionalism and skill of our teachers, the tireless support of our inclusion team and support staff, the wonderful and positive support we get from families, and most importantly the hard work and dedication of our students.  Well done to all of us!

Over the year, (if you’re new to the newsletter,) I try to share school information, as well as thoughtful reflections at different times in the year that might support students and families through their RHS experience.

I’ve been writing these newsletters since September 2019 now, and am amazed that I still have new things upon which to comment, or more importantly greater and greater successes for our students and our school to celebrate.  Long may that continue.

The start of the academic year swings round like an old friend, and after nearly 25 years of teaching, there are things that are so natural to me, I find a curious calm in doing things “all over again.”  The welcome back assemblies, looking at a new planner and filling in student names, the first bus duty with our year 7 students as they get used to our queuing systems and routines, seeing colleagues again after the summer.  All of these things settle in like a comfortable jacket that you’ve been wearing for years.  Also, and this is of course of the greatest importance, my birthday is early September, and so the start of the academic year also brings with it a sense of reflection.  I was 49 this September, and so that sense of reflection is all the greater, as (a kind colleague pointed out) I am entering my 5th decade on the planet.

This is my 7th year as Headteacher of RHS, and so, those students that joined us in year 7 September 2019 (my first year as the head) are entering their final year here, and completing year 13.  By August of 2026 I will officially have seen one whole cohort through their time here at RHS! What a privilege, and something I’ll take the time to discuss and share with the students over the coming year - it has been a fulsome and eventful 7 years, that has shaped all our characters in one way or another. Plenty to ruminate on there.

That said of course, I only mentioned my birthday to make everyone aware that in September 2026 I shall be 50, to give you plenty of time to start saving for that 50th birthday gift.

Once again - welcome back, students, colleagues and families to another year here at RHS.  It will be different to the last, as they always are, but it will be no less successful.

Stay well and safe everyone,

Mr Grady

Considerate parking

We appreciate how busy drop-off and pick-up times can be on the roads around the school, so please can we ask all parents / carers to be considerate when parking to drop off and collect students.

This is important for the safety of our students and staff and also important for the consideration of our neighbours. People living in houses near the school should be able to exit their driveways safely during these times.

Ananditha performs poem at Tour of Britain

Ananditha Venkatramanan in Year 12 is the Young Poet Laureate for Warwickshire and in her role she has been part of a number of exciting events over the last few months.

Ananditha was recently commissioned to write a poem for the Lloyds Men’s Tour of Britain cycle race and she was there at the start of the event in Atherstone to read her poem, ‘The Races.’ You can watch her performing her poem on our Facebook page.

Ananditha tells us more about her experiences as Young Poet Laureate: “Over the summer, I performed at and went to the Refugee Week event which was so amazing and such an incredible opportunity - I really loved it! Along with that, I went to the youth conference in April to perform a poem on knife crime, to the School's junior and senior book awards, and I got my poem 'A Technicolour Dream' put on the Future Faces exhibition in Rugby Art Gallery and Museum, and judged at the School's Poetry Slam in Coventry! All of these opportunities have been such a massive privilege to be a part of and I'm so grateful for every single one of them.”

Essay competition success

Congratulations to Eleanor Newey, whose essay entered in the Newnham College competition was judged as 'highly commended', a great achievement!

The Woolf essay prize is a competition run by Newnham College Cambridge in which women in year 12 can write an essay inspired by Virginia Woolf's 'A Room of One's Own'. Eleanor explained “I looked at the status of women in Jane Austen's novels and Regency society, comparing ideas around marriage in fiction versus reality. I'm grateful for the opportunity to write a university style essay which was judged as 'highly commended' and would really recommend it to any year 12s looking to engage with literature and feminist ideas.” Check the Newnham College website for details of next year’s competition. Well done Eleanor!

Co-curricular clubs

Lunchtime clubs are starting up this Autumn term, with many clubs already running, including sports clubs, music and drama clubs, creative writing, Glow club and maths.

Keep an eye on this web page for more clubs coming soon. Clubs are also promoted on posters around school.

Join the 200 Club

Join the 200 Club as a fun way of supporting your child through school! By buying a 200 Club share (or more), you get the chance of winning in the monthly and quarterly draws at the same time as raising funds to support your child’s time at RHS. Last year, the PTA paid out over £5000 for extra-curricular “bids” from the school and the 200 Club is a big part of that fundraising! Some examples of things the PTA have supported have been the Digital Theatre Plus resource, support for the Curriculum Enhancement Week (the activities in the last week of the school year) and many more.

A share costs £12 and you will be entered into monthly and quarterly draws throughout the year – that’s 40 chances of getting a cash prize. And the more shares you buy the greater the chance of winning :)

If you’d like to be involved, you can find us on the school website or click here to complete the online form. If you would rather complete a printable form scan the QR code below, then either hand this in to reception or email it back to RHS200Club@rugbyhighschool.co.uk. Payment is by cheque or via bank transfer. Deadline is 31st October. All share tickets will be sent out by email after half term.

Best wishes,
Tess Juckes, PTA 200 Club Organiser

Something Told The Wild Geese
Rachel Field

Something told the wild geese
It was time to go.
Though the fields lay golden
Something whispered,—"Snow."
Leaves were green and stirring,
Berries, luster-glossed,
But beneath warm feathers
Something cautioned,—"Frost."
All the sagging orchards
Steamed with amber spice,
But each wild breast stiffened
At remembered ice.
Something told the wild geese
It was time to fly,—
Summer sun was on their wings,
Winter in their cry.
