News from Mr Grady

30th January 2025

Hello everyone!

For those celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year, a happy new year to you all, as you welcome in the year of the snake.

For those of you that commented on the cancellation of my new year’s dip in the North Sea, thank you for both your comment, and the confirmation that people read my fortnightly ramblings – much appreciated.

This week, we are very excited about Chaos, our school production, as it runs from Wednesday to Friday evenings, 7pm nightly.  I hope you’ve got your ticket.

It is always a joy watching cast, musicians and crew under the steady gaze and direction of Miss Brady and Mrs D’Souza come together to create something special.

As ever, it is the ensemble nature of the production that always cheers me up the most as everyone has their part to play in the production, and the professionalism, enthusiasm and energy of the students never ceases to amaze me.

As a Drama-type I have to admit to being jealous of students having the joy of rehearsals, and those special moment where you’re all back stage together, ready to go on, and the adrenaline is flowing.

And of course, there is nothing like standing and luxuriating in a wave of applause at the end of the show, or a gust of laughter when you get the timing right on a joke or bit of stage business.

There is something very immediate about the validation that comes from live performance, and I hope our students enjoy the privilege and pleasure of entertaining and challenging our audiences over the next three nights.  And to those parents and carers of students involved in the production, who have driven them backwards and forwards from rehearsals, and who will have very tired students for the next few nights – thank you for your patience and your support.  As you watch the production, I’m sure you’ll know it was all worth it!

To the cast, band and crew, I say, “Break a leg!” and to the lucky audiences, enjoy the show!

Stay safe and well,

Mr Grady

Parents and carers - the trustees of Rugby High School share a yearly questionnaire as your chance to feedback to trustees about the education your child is receiving at Rugby High School.

We would be grateful if you would take some time to respond to this questionnaire.

Your answers are anonymous, but please do leave your contact details if you wish to be contacted by a relevant member of staff in relation to your comments.

Staff and trustees read every single comment and analyse the data the questionnaire produces, so we would request that responses are professional, respectful and constructive in their tone.

The survey closes at 9am on Friday 7th February.

Thank you for taking the time to share your views, and help us continue to provide the highest standards of education for your child at Rugby High School.

Year 9’s experience Shakespearian theatre

This term, Year 9 have been studying Shakespeare's "Macbeth". To help us learn about how expert directors and actors take Shakespeare's plays from the page to the stage, Miss Danks organised a trip to the theatre to see the comedy 'Twelfth Night' at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford last Wednesday, 15th January.

Xuyan shares her experience of the trip: “I really enjoyed the play because it was very funny and interactive, and the actors all played their parts really well. Michael Grady-Hall's suitably crazy and very funny Feste, Joplin Sibtain's drunken, good time-loving, but fragile Sir Toby Belch and Samuel's West's Puritan-turned-fool in love Malvolio were especially strong. I hope that in the future I can go to more trips like this because this one not only made me laugh a lot, but also helped me learn a lot about Shakespeare's plays!” Xuyan S

And pictured above is Miss Danks looking suitably happy as she sits beneath of a photo of her favourite actor, Edward Bennett (and Michelle Terry) in the RST cafe!

Year 11's poetry-filled day

On Tuesday we took Year 11s to the Poetry Live conference at the Derngate Theatre, Northampton. It was a full and fun day of poetry lectures from poets that Year 11 study for their Literature exam. Carol Ann Duffy, Simon Armitage, John Agard and Dalit Nagra wowed our cohort with insights into their poems, what inspired them to write the poem and we even had chance to ask pertinent questions to support our understanding of the poems for the examination! The AQA chief examiner for the unseen poetry section also give lots of top tips on this part of the exam. A super day out for all and well done Year 11 - you were a pleasure to take to this event!

Onatti Theatre performances in French and Spanish

Earlier this week all students in Years 8 and 9 and those who study French and/or Spanish in Years 10 and 11 were treated to a fantastic theatre performance by Onatti Productions - or two if they study both French and Spanish! The plays are aimed at teenagers and included plenty of humour with comedic mishaps and misunderstandings. Both of the plays were delivered entirely in Spanish or French and were wonderfully engaging.

After watching the performances students said: "It was a lot of fun and the actors made it really easy to follow the story", "I was so pleased that I could understand more than last year - seeing this new play really helped me to realise how much progress I've made", "I'm already looking forward to seeing another play next year!" With many thanks to the PTA for making this enrichment activity possible.

Table Tennis Champs

Daya C, Anya S and Srihamsini G competed in the 'West Schools Table Tennis Area Finals' in the U19 Girls competition. They had a closely fought match, but managed to overcome their opponents and win the area finals. This means they will now go forward to represent the West Area in a semi final round, against North West, South West and London. The top two teams in this next competition going through to the National Schools Team Finals! So we wish them lots of luck in the semi-finals on 1st March.
