Rugby High School - Autumn Term 2024 Issue 5

News from Mr Grady

11th November 2024

Hello Everyone!

Welcome back to the second half of the Autumn Term, and with the clocks having changed, it really does feel like winter draws on.

During the half-term break, I had the good fortune to spend a few days in Brighton and Hove (one of my favourite places) taking in the sea air, catching up with friends, checking out some stand-up comedy, walking across Devil’s Dyke (in the pouring rain) and then, fascinatingly, taking part in a pub quiz that just happened to be on while we were getting a bite to eat.

The quiz was, to put it politely, not a well-organised affair, but what became apparent during the evening, as we marked the answers of the table next to us, was that the teams were made up of quite an international mix of customers.

The team next to us were clearly Dutch, and despite my natural competitiveness, it seemed only fair to try and explain the “anagrams” round so they had at least a decent chance of getting something right.

With their surprisingly good English and my wife and I’s little Dutch, we successfully explained the round was anagrams of musical instruments.  But not simple instruments.  Whoever heard of a Sousaphone?  Once we’d successfully helped our neighbours, it turned out the team the other side of us were Swiss, and had been surfing in Newquay, due to the surf in Switzerland not being all that great, as it’s landlocked.  Their grasp of the anagrams was equally good once we’d explained the concept.

What was absolutely delightful was the sharing of stories about travelling, of the best places to eat in certain towns, and the wonderful realisation that if you are travelling yourself, then when you meet other travellers, despite what may be very many differences of opinion, you already have one thing in common:  A love of seeing new places, experiencing new things and meeting new people.

Travel is reputed to broaden the mind, and even in our short three-day trip to the South Coast, we had experiences we’d never had, and met people we may never have met, touching on each other’s lives in the most positive way – extending a friendly welcome, enjoying our shared humanity, and wishing each other well for our onward travels.

As the darkness draws in for the winter, that kernel of light and warmth should see us through until our next trip.  I wonder who we’ll bump into next…?

Have a great week everyone,

Stay safe and well,
With all best wishes,

Mr Grady

Black History Month

Last month in school we celebrated Black History Month! This year’s theme for Black History Month is “Reclaiming Narratives" and we'd love our students to dip into some great books written by Black authors.

Here's some 'Editor's Picks' of books for Black History Month 2024.

At the end of October our Main School Prefects also organised an open mic event in recognition and celebration of Black History Month. Under the theme of 'Reclaiming Narratives' students were invited to perform a reading, song or musical item to a live audience at lunchtime and what a moving and powerful event this was.

We heard beautiful renditions of music of Black origin including songs by Corinne Bailey Rae, and an emotive and thought-provoking reading of the 2020 poem Black Lives Matter. We heard from students across all Key Stages and were even treated to the amazing moonwalking skills of Mr Obi and a rousing performance of Chuck Berry's 'Johnny Be Good' by Mr Tarry. This was another moment of our community coming together to support, raise awareness and celebrate and one of those moments that make us, as their teachers, so super proud of our students and remember what a privilege it is to work with them.

Year 12 Engineers visit Britvic

On Friday 8th October 6 us 12 physics students partaking in the industrial Cadets’ project went on an exciting trip to the Britvic factory in Rugby led by Miss Mighall, this was an amazing opportunity to allow us to see the exact machine we would be basing our project on for the next eight months! We were led by our project leader and Britvic employee Adam who toured us around the massive 273,000 square ft factory and walked us through the mechanics of all the machines and the production process.

We were all surprised to learn that one of the largest drink production factories in Europe was hidden away in rugby! Alongside this we were all shocked that the Britvic factory produced over 120,000 cans of soft drinks in an hour. With industrial cadet Rosie exclaiming “being in the factory with so much Pepsi Max felt like entering heaven!!”

Amongst being shell-shocked by the sheer amount of Pepsi Max along with the many other drinks the factory produced, visiting the Britvic factory was a unique experience and fantastic opportunity to be able to see the equipment that we would be working on to fully immerse us in the engineering world.

Music Appreciation Day

This will be held on Thursday 21st November and will be a non-uniform day. Students are invited to dress as their favourite music artist / group or wear an iconic concert / music video look. They can also wear a band t-shirt and there will be a donation of £1 to dress up. At lunchtime there will be performances!

Athletics Rising Star

Congratulations to Betsy Fahmy in Year 8, who was selected as "Athlete of the Year" by her club, Rugby & Northants Athletics. This was in light of the many achievements Betsy has had in the last season.

As Betsy has progressed, she is now training 5 times a week (!), and it's clear that her dedication to her sport is really paying off.

Massive well done Betsy!

'Since they have died'

Since they have died to give us gentleness,
And hearts kind with contentment and quiet mirth,
Let us who live give also happiness
And love, that’s born of pity, to the earth.

For, I have thought, some day they may lie sleeping
Forgetting all the weariness and pain,
And smile to think their world is in our keeping,
And laughter come back to the earth again.
