News from Mr Grady

13th September 2024

Hello Everyone!

And a huge welcome back, although we’re already coming to the end of week 2. I do hope everyone had a restful break, that you had time for family, friends and fun.

And now we’re back. And welcome to our new year 7 students, to our joining year 12 students, and to new colleagues. I hope you enjoy the RHS community and get as much out of it as we all do.

I always think working in schools gives you the chance for two “new starts” a year.  We all get a New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, but in schools we also get the end of one academic year, as we wrap everything up and close the school for a bit, and then a new academic year, to kick things all off again. New shoes, new pencil case, maybe a new bag, perhaps a new hairstyle, and in my case, new reading glasses, which I’m still smarting about to be honest.

My ageing aside, there is something wonderful about the start of a new academic year, as you get to have the reset of priorities, the chance for a few resolutions on how this year is going to be different to last year: You’re going to get your work done faster, your grades will be higher, and your overall performance will be stronger.  And of course that’s all very well, if you have a plan, and some specific things you’re going to address.

For those of you paying attention, you’ll see that I’ve been watching the Olympics over the Summer, and the constant thing one hears when listening to athletes post event in their discussion of goals, their aims and what they’re striving for.  They will also talk in detail about the ways in which they’ve achieved this. They won’t simply state: I want to be faster, higher, stronger, nor will they state something so obvious as “I want to win Gold.”  They will have their own very specific aspiration, that may involve a medal, but in most cases it is about maintaining the level of their performance and perhaps, following hard work, training and focus, better their personal best. Irrespective of the aim, they have a careful plan with which to achieve it.

So as we all make a start back in this academic year of 2024-25, rather than some generic words that equate to “I want to do the same, but better,” there’s the chance to really reflect on what actions we might take, what realistic goals we might set, and how we might maintain that approach across the year.

We’ll have the chance to hear from our very own Olympian, Lauren Henry, later on this month when she visits the school, and we can hear how she really was faster and stronger than the opposition, and how she achieved such a wonderful victory.

Meanwhile, as I gaze myopically at my computer screen, typing this newsletter, I wonder if my +1 prescription might need to be a wee bit stronger.

Stay well and safe everyone,

With all best wishes,

Mr Grady

Welcome to new students and welcome back to returning students!

The corridors are bustling again, the assembly hall filled with students and the canteen queued up for delicious break-time snacks. Post-summer catch-up chats have filled form rooms and spilled out onto the field at lunchtime.

New students have been perusing timetables and school maps, finding their way around and working out which science lab is on which set of stairs, with the help of other students!

In assemblies last week Head Teacher, Mr Grady, and Deputy Head, Mrs Grimes, welcomed all our students back from their summer break. Mr Grady ran through some of the essential messages on safeguarding, attendance and mobile phones and then contemplated the importance of three key words fundamental to RHS - kindness, care and respect! He encouraged students to "Consider them in how you talk to each other, how you act towards others and how you conduct yourselves around the school, at break and lunch and on the school buses and you can't go far wrong!"

For parents/carers of students new to Rugby High School please follow us on social media for regular updates from the school! You can find us on:

Ancient Greek Certificates awarded

Congratulations to our students who chose to study Ancient Greek and took an intermediate certificate in it earlier this year. They did extremely well given they only had half-hour long lunchtime sessions to do it in, over just one year! They achieved 1 pass, 5 merits and 3 distinctions. Well done to all of them!

Plea for fiction books!

We have a popular book swap in school reception and we tend to find that books are borrowed but aren't necessarily returned or replaced with a swap! If you have been tidying out your home and have some teen fiction ready surplus to requirements that you'd be prepared to donate to the book swap, we'd be so grateful! Any fiction that is age- and challenge-appropriate for our students would be fantastic!

If you are able to help us out, please could you ask your son or daughter to bring books to Miss Danks in room 1 in the Drama block or take them to reception for Miss Danks to collect?

Thank you!

Literary competition triumph for Isla!

Year 10 student, Isla B, has achieved the amazing feat of being judged one of three winners in the Martha Mills Young Writer Prize!

The Martha Mills Young Writer Prize invites 11- to 14-year-olds living in the UK to submit up to 500 words of any type of prose – such as a fictional story, a piece of schoolwork, or a diary entry – based on this year's theme "A secret".

The competition judges were looking for novelty of treatment and writing flair and said they could not have been more impressed with the entries. This year's judging panel included renowned novelist Philip Pullman, author of the "His Dark Materials" trilogy!

Over 1300 entries were received and the judges said the young writers made their task very hard with hundreds of original interpretations of this year’s theme.

Talented creative writer Isla is one of the three winners and will receive £200 as well as a selection of books and an invitation to a prize-giving ceremony at the London Review Bookshop. The three winners' entries will be published in a pamphlet available to buy at the bookshop and online.

This is an incredible achievement and we are so proud of Isla and her initiative, originality and creativity. Huge congratulations, Isla!

Faster and Faster and Faster She Went
JonArno Lawson

Faster and faster and faster she went,
and all she rolled over got broken and bent.
Who on earth was she and why was she sent?

Though many were questioned, nobody knew,
but the faster she went, the bigger she grew,
and the bigger she grew, the faster she went–

some gathered to wonder at what it all meant
and others to ask what she might represent,
but still none could guess what might be the intent

of her surging and burgeoning whirling descent,
none could make sense of it, none could prevent
the flattening violence the world underwent,

till someone threw up a great wall of cement,
right in the path of the way she was headed,
and that's where she stopped at last, slightly imbedded.

Then a laugh was heard, "Excellent! Just what I needed!
I wanted to stop–now I've finally succeeded!
And look, I've gone back to my regular size!"

And when she rose up, she looked so angelic it
seemed that to chastise her would be indelicate.
Right then they decided they might as well hide it–

and so they concealed from the innocent, guiltless
(though none would say harmless), and guileless girl,
their flattened, destabilized, half-destroyed world.
