News from Mr Grady

23rd May 2024

Hello Everyone,

I do hope you are looking forward to a restful half term break.  It feels, bizarrely, as though this break has come around quite quickly, despite this having been a seven-week half term.  I suspect the next seven weeks, as busy and as full as the last seven weeks have been, could be even more full of incident.

As I have always said from the start of my newsletters, I would do my best to keep them light, focussed on the life of RHS, and not too intruded upon by the outside world, wherever possible.  There have been notable exceptions, and with the Prime Minister’s announcement yesterday evening of a General Election on 4th July, I feel this is one to mention.

Obviously, as a school we will not be expressing any partisan views, but we will of course be encouraging our students and our community to engage with the process, the debates, the manifestos, and the process of our democracy.  It is a great chance to reflect on where we might get our news from, where we can check facts, and where we can ensure we look at claims and counter-claims with a critical and informed eye.

It allows us to hear different opinions expressed, to reflect on our own, but importantly to listen and to try to understand different viewpoints in a mature and considered fashion, and to come to our own conclusions.

In what I am sure could be a noisy period across all forms of media and social media, it will, I am sure, mean we all have to take care to ensure we are fully informed, that we have our facts straight.

As manifestos emerge, and public hustings and debates take place, I urge everyone to interact with our democratic process, a great chance for our students to unpick the workings of our democracy, to be interested, and to make a difference – our vision aims to give students a confident voice, and the next few weeks will be a great chance for us to explore this with them.

I do hope you have a restful half term,

Stay well and safe everyone,

With all best wishes,

Mr Grady

Prefect elections

Over the last few weeks, we have been running the recruitment process for our new main school prefects for 2024/25. We have received a large number of amazing applications of which we can only choose six.

The finalist’s manifestos have been on display in school and students and staff were invited to take time to read them and choose the one who would most suit the role. Voting closed yesterday and our six successful candidates will be informed tomorrow, Friday 24th May.

Main School Open Evening coming up

Our Open Evening will be held on Wednesday 19th June from 5 - 7pm.

Parents/carers and prospective students will be able to explore the school, speak to teachers and current students and hear talks from the senior team.

Speeches from our Senior Leadership Team and students will take place at 5.15pm in the hall and a similar version at the same time in the 6th Form Common Room. They will be repeated at 6.15pm.

Students in years 7 and 8 will be invited to volunteer to be Tour Guides and some will be asked by various school departments to help out with activities. Students in older years may be invited to help in departments too.

As visitors tour the school we hope they will get a sense of the richness and diversity of the learning experiences that the school offers and of the friendly and purposeful atmosphere in which students are able to explore their talents and realise their potential.

Please share the date and time with anyone you know who have children in years 4 or 5 who may be interested in coming along.

Duke of Edinburgh Golds awarded at the Palace

Eight of our former students recently headed to Buckingham Palace for a brilliant day with glorious sunshine, to be awarded their Gold Duke of Edinburgh awards!

Congratulations to Olivia, Catherine, Heather, Anousha, Eleanor, Shenara, Rodrigo, Lucy and Harriet on your fantastic achievement! They expressed their thanks to Mrs Williams for everything she did to help them complete their awards too!

Year 9's CREST Certificates awarded

A few weeks ago, Year 9 completed their Science Bronze CREST projects on Disease, Development and Diagnostics and their certificates have now been awarded by the British Science Association.

The students were given a choice of 6 projects which included topics on periods (with questions about why periods might be seen as taboo) period pain, HPV and cervical cancer, endometriosis and global healthcare during pregnancy. The students worked individually or in small groups and produced some super researched reports.  They then had the chance to share their findings with their peers at the end of the project.

They should all be very proud of their achievements and have learned not only a great deal about the science in each topic, but also about different careers as well as research and presentation skills.  These projects have been very helpful to students in Y11 when applying for Engineering scholarships to help them with their A-level STEM studies as well as being a springboard for completing our Engineering programme in Year 12.

The Story Of Grumble Tone
Ella Wheeler Wilcox

There was a boy named Grumble Tone, who ran away to sea.
"I'm sick of things on land," he said, "as sick as I can be,
A life upon the bounding wave is just the life for me!"
But the seething ocean billows failed to stimulate his mirth,
For he did not like the vessel or the dizzy rolling berth,
And he thought the sea was almost as unpleasant as the earth.

He wandered into foreign lands, he saw each wondrous sight,
But nothing that he heard or saw seemed just exactly right,
And so he journeyed on and on, still seeking for delight.
He talked with kings and ladies grand; he dined in courts, they say,
But always found the people dull and longed to get away
To search for that mysterious land where he should want to stay.

He wandered over all the world, his hair grew white as snow,
He reached that final bourne at last where all of us must go,
But never found the land he sought; the reason would you know?
The reason was that north or south, where'er his steps were bent
On land or sea, in court or hall, he found but discontent,
For he took his disposition with him, everywhere he went.
