News from Mr Grady

18th May 2023

Hello everyone,

In my last newsletter I spoke very briefly about the fact that our year 11 and 13 students would have “left” by the time I wrote to you again.

Last Friday, the 12th, was their official “leaving day” where we celebrated their time here, and gave them an official “send off.”  Having said that, they are of course, all back in attending revision sessions, or sitting formal examinations.  And I’m sure everyone in our community wishes them luck for the next few weeks as they negotiate their exams.  They have been incredibly well-prepared and we know they will do brilliantly!

What was an absolute delight about their leaving events were the wonderful, warm and supportive atmospheres at both.

Firstly our year 11 students had a breakfast and musical performances, and the chance to reminisce about their time at RHS, with some photos and messages from form groups.  I was particularly taken by Mrs Wallace’s Form who had taken the same photos at the start of every year since year 7, with them all in the same places each time – a really lovely reminder of the journey and the growing up and maturing that her form had done since their first year in 2018.

And once the year 11s had all left about 11:30, with their school shirts all well and truly signed, we had the arrival from around 12:15 of the year 13, in full formal wear to attend their leaving party, complete with awards, a non-alcoholic drinks reception and an ice-cream van.  This was a fab afternoon, as it was easy to see the young adults that our year 13 have become, and wonderful to celebrate their resilience and hard work over the last 7 or 2 years, dependent on when they had joined us.

The speeches from the Senior Student Leadership Team were a testament to them, and also to the work we do here at RHS.  I’m so pleased that our students took the time to thank all the staff who had supported them through their time at RHS, and also each other for the support they had offered and received.  Once again it struck me, as it does on a daily basis, how very special RHS is as a community, how powerful our legacy is, when one looks at the fine young people who have worked with us, and how we have shaped, supported and educated them, ensuring they fill every ounce of the potential they all have.

What a fabulous day last Friday was!

The very best of luck to all our year 11 and 13 students (and the families supporting them) in the coming weeks!

Stay well and safe everyone,

With all best wishes,
Mr Grady

Prefect Elections

Voting is about to open for our new prefects who will take over the roles from our current year 11 prefects. The final candidates have been shortlisted and there are 10 who have pitched their manifestos telling the rest of the school about themselves. These are available to read in the entrance hall and all students in years 7 - 10 can vote for who they feel would make the best prefect.

Voting opens tomorrow at 8am and closes on Thursday 25th May at 5pm. Good luck to all the candidates!

Duke of Edinburgh Practice Expeditions

Well done to all our students who undertook their Duke of Edinburgh Silver or Gold Practice expeditions recently. The teams worked really well together and coped with the inclement weather!

The location was the Peak District and the teams walked about 13km to their first night's camp site in Edale. After pitching site they had a fun evening with students using their camp skills with trangers to cook dinner. Thursday morning's hike was a similar distance to Hope Valley, where luckily most managed to get tents up before the rain arrived and they bedded down for a rather soggy, cold evening.

Friday morning was pretty wet, but the rain cleared and the sun came out and another 11kmm was walked. At the end of the day the teams welcomed the sight of the coach and they headed home via McDonald's for a well-earned treat! The teams are looking forward to their qualification expeditions in the Brecon Beacons in July!

First Aid Training

This week all our year 10 students have been developing their First Aid skills with training from St John Ambulance. Starting with a primary survey of a casualty to quickly assess the situation, students learnt the memorable acronym DR ABC - check for Danger, check for a Response, open Airway, check Breathing and check Circulation.

After learning the recovery position our year 10s practised in pairs, always rolling the patient towards themselves and keeping the cushioning arm in place as they carefully manoeuvred each other.

Following a demonstration, students got hands on practising CPR on a dummy which confirmed students were applying the correct depth of compression with a click. They were also taught how to handle minor or catastrophic bleeding, with the use of a pair of fake legs and a collapsible knife, and honed their bandaging technique.

The final session was on mental health and looked at different conditions, signs and symptoms and treatment options. Thank you to St John's Ambulance for their training.

Football Training Experience

This month Evelyn in year 10 had a special training session at St George's Park with some England coaches and here she shares her experience:

"I was invited to an England coaching session at St George's Park on Friday with some other girls from my club, Coventry City. It was a part of the Powerhouse Project (which aims to help aspiring female coaches in football) and was a whole day of sessions given by professionals. I particularly enjoyed the final drills with the current assistant coach for the Lionesses (who works alongside Sarina Weigman)! I am thrilled to have been given this chance and hope I can take some things I learnt to improve my game further." Evelyn, Year 10

Waterfall's Song

born in some long-ago
flicker of time
water arrives
first
a fragile drop
a quiet trickle till
another time-tremble
sends it braiding through earth
surging all the way to
today
sheer-bubbling

fast-flowing
rock-rolling down cliffs
a ceaseless torrent plunging
into perpetual swirls
dangerous dark pools

and all the while
crystalline spray wildly
laces through air
a bonanza of rainbow flecks
sparkling with abandon

the wind is enchanted

hurriedly flies off
(colourful new mist in tow)
vanishing in a breath from
today

only to be found
slow-seeping into
long ago legends
or trickling quietly

into the future
