News from Mr Grady

17th November 2022

Hello everyone,

Well, the best laid plans…as they say.  Obviously this week we’ve had a visit from His Majesty’s Inspectorate, and short of thanking all students, staff and parents for their time, comments and support, there is nothing more I can say until the report is published and shared with everyone in our community in a few weeks’ time.

More importantly though, I had planned to talk about (and as you can see, am going to continue to talk about…) one of the best experiences I have had with our students in quite some time.

I had the privilege of accompanying some of our year 12 Physicists to their orientation and planning day at Cummins for their Industrial Cadets Gold project.

The students were given a presentation from the lead trainer from Cummins, all the way from America, a really detailed exploration of problem solving planning in the engineering world.  It was revelatory, as an adult, with a few years in leadership, the experiences and the learning the students were exposed to was of the very highest quality, both in terms of engineering in its purest sense, but also the industrial and business aspects that ensured students could understand the different roles and responsibilities, systems and processes that ensure a global company can be successful, both in what it designs, manufactures and maintains, and how, given all that, it continues to be a developing and profitable business.

I am hoping the students will be able to share their experiences through assemblies and class visits, as this was simply an incredible practical and hands-on day of seeing where our currciulum fits into a real world setting.

Dr Fletcher and the science department have been running this for years now, and so it was a real pleasure to see it in action, a fantastic addition to the curriculum we offer our students.

I look forward too, to seeing how our students cope with the problem they are working on to solve, (a broken generator, on site in South America) and how they manage keeping up with the “Gantt chart” and maintaining focus during the project.

A simply wonderful day, for which I can only thank the Science department and students, who were great company, and as ever, curious, focussed and ambitious.

Stay well and safe everyone,

With all best wishes,
Mr Grady

Prefect Team

Last Thursday the 2022 Prefect Team met with Mrs Grogan to pass on 'student voice' comments gathered from form time visits and the most recent School Council meeting. Issues raised varied from more vegetarian options in the canteen to charity fundraising events. The Prefects hope to streamline 'student voice' reaching the Senior Leadership Team and raise the issues most important to the student body.

The Prefects also helped support the Year 9 Buddies' first event with their Year 7's, an icebreaker activity to help the Year 7's settle into life at Rugby High and experience the school through a Year 9 perspective.

A first for Rugby High School

Last week saw a historic event for Rugby High School - our first ever Sixth Form boys competitive football match, played against Rugby Free Secondary School.

The boys played with passion and confidence and represented our school exceedingly well. The school's community spirit was clearly evident too as, when setting up the match, a huge number of year 10 and 11 girls came to help with the flags and hurdle barrier setup. In addition to this, the audience gathered to watch the match was impressive. The team decided that the man of the match went to ML for his consistency and perseverance throughout the game.

And a special thanks to MJ for being the runner each time the ball went flying off and, of course, for being the paparazzi.

The score was 3-3 when it reached full time and they decided to go to penalties. We narrowly lost the penalties unfortunately, but it was truly a historic moment to be proud of!

Quantum on the Clock - Physics Competition Success

Congratulations to DM in Year 13 who has been awarded highly commended in a recent Institute of Physics Competition.

The IOP group for Quantum Optics, Quantum Information and Quantum Control set out on a mission to get more young people engaged with quantum science and technology. They challenged A-Level and equivalent students to create three-minute videos about any aspect of quantum science or technology, individually or in teams.

Their expert judges were hugely impressed by the creativity, enthusiasm and advanced research that went into all the videos – ranging from stop-motion sweets as particles to news shows about quantum computing algorithms and cartoon characters discussing black-body radiation.

DM's video on "Building a Quantum Computer" was awarded highly commended and can viewed here on YouTube.

Peer Listening now available

If students need someone to talk to, aside from the pastoral care team, two peer listeners are now available daily, 1 - 2pm, in the Sports Hall classroom. Students can drop in or book a slot by emailing the Peer Listening team. The email address can be found on posters around school.

Peer Listeners are in the Sixth Form and have been trained by The Samaritans and this programme is part of the whole school’s focus on promoting student welfare and raising awareness of the importance of emotional well-being.

Roadworks on local roads

We have been advised that essential laying of electrical cables is in progress along the length of Longrood Road and Bawnmore Road. The works will be controlled by traffic lights and are expected to continue until 11th December. Works immediately in front of school should take place during the weekends.

During this period, it will help local congestion if parents/carers could drop off students further away from school than usual and, if possible, avoid Longrood Road and Bawnmore Road. Please allow extra time for travel to ensure students are in registration on time.

Futility
Wilfred Owen

Move him into the sun—
Gently its touch awoke him once,
At home, whispering of fields half-sown.
Always it woke him, even in France,
Until this morning and this snow.
If anything might rouse him now
The kind old sun will know.

Think how it wakes the seeds—
Woke once the clays of a cold star.
Are limbs, so dear-achieved, are sides
Full-nerved, still warm, too hard to stir?
Was it for this the clay grew tall?
—O what made fatuous sunbeams toil
To break earth's sleep at all?

All things Poetry found at Poetry by Heart
