Rugby High School - Summer 2022 Issue 22

News from Mr Grady

Hello everyone,

What an amazing couple of weeks we’ve had, our Open Evening for prospective students, Induction Day for our Year 6 students joining us in September, a trip to Wimbledon this week, and trips out to Coventry Cathedral, Years 10 and 12 out on Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh retrospectively, Year 12 induction happening for our joining Year 12s, a musical celebration, and Sports Day today.  Phew.  And that’s not to mention al the exciting things going on in lessons and really challenging students to be curious and explore more and more challenging parts of the curriculum.  Rugby High School at its best!

I’m very jealous in particular of the students who got to see the tennis stars at Wimbledon, as some of the games have been real nail-biters.  There is something particularly exciting about tennis played at such a level, the resilience and sportsmanship of the players a real inspiration, and the range of attitudes to success on show also a great lesson for our students!  Some players quietly and tenaciously taking responsibility for their game, and others often pointing the finger outside of themselves, finding excuses and not taking personal responsibility.

I spoke to the Year 12 students this week about that “half-way” point of their A-Levels, and could easily have said much the same to the Year 10.  You are, if you like halfway through your match, and you have a choice now about how you want to finish – you might be feeling confident, or you might be feeling less so, but now is the time to pause, reflect, take stock and take charge.  You’ve got the support of the crowd, and it’s over to you!  The summer break will be a great time for that pause and reflection, and consideration of all the advice you’ve had this year.

It never ceases to amaze me that that 60 second break the tennis players have to eat a mouthful of banana, towel themselves down, and rehydrate can be such an intense refocus.  You see players return to the court with changed attitudes, approaches and games, and coming back from disappointing starts to something more pleasing.

Well.  We have 6 weeks to munch a banana, dry off and refocus – imagine how much more strongly you can return to the match with that!

Have a great week everyone, and looking forward to the group effort of Sports Day later on today.

With all best wishes, stay well and safe!
Mr Grady

Bring Your Dog To Work Day, 24th June, 2022
My best day ever! by Dandy Danks

Dandy Danks, 14 year old collie cross, had an extremely enjoyable day when she came to RHS for part of the morning on 24th June. The Rugby High student and staff community welcomed Dandy very warmly and she had a wonderful time receiving far more attention than she ever does at home! It was clearly a pleasant novelty  to have a dog around school and students commented on how good Dandy looked for her age (music to her ears!) and how placid and gentle she was. By break, after happy sessions with 10ME4  and 9T1 English classes, Dandy was so exhausted, she couldn't even gather the energy to leave her comfy basket, so received visitors from her bed as they visited room 1 for a cuddle and brief chat.

Dandy had many new experiences such as shaking paws with a headteacher, colouring to music in form time, having her photo taken with the members of the English and Drama departments who were in school and even seeing herself in a mirror for the first time! Dandy also did a sniffing circuit of the school field, visited the school main office and attempted to break into the school's kitchen - but was fortunately spotted and ejected.

We all enjoyed this happy experience and I know that Dandy is going to be mithering to make a return visit!

Merryn from Year 7: "I loved meeting Dandy, such a lovely dog. I hope she liked all the attention too." She absolutely did, Merryn, and spent the evening in her basket fast asleep recovering from all the excitement!

Cooking with the Community at RHS

Rugby High School recently welcomed the Entrust Care Partnership who used the facilities in Food to run one of their latest projects.  Over the course of six Monday evenings, families came together to cook a range of products including yogurt pot pizza, breakfast muffins and noodle salad.  Led by an expert cookery tutor and supported by partnership staff and volunteers, the aim of the project was to:

  • share/teach skills for cooking healthy meals on a budget;
  • increase participants’ confidence in cooking;
  • encourage young people to experience new tastes - a real challenge for some;
  • spend time cooking together as a family;
  • make new friends.

It was a pleasure to be able to support this activity, and to work with the families and staff who attended; each session was filled with excitement in anticipation of tasting the products made and for what the following weeks activity would bring.

In total, we raised £725.48 for Warwickshire Pride.

Warwickshire Pride will be using our donation to help young people across Warwickshire and right here in the Rugby community:

£10 will keep our phoneline running for one month

£20 will enable us to hire a room to provide 1 - 1 support for an LGBT+ person in need

£30 keeps our youth groups running for one week so we can give LGBT+ young people a safe place to go

Thank you all for your fantastic efforts!

Buoyant End to the Football Season

We were delighted to get a post-season invite to play in a five-a-side tournament at Harris Church of England Academy. Our Year 7 team played two very well fought matches, against mixed Year 7 & 8, including some academy players. We won our first game against Avon Valley, but then watched nervously as Avon Valley lost to Harris. We battled as hard as we could against Harris, but they won through and will play in the level 3 finals at Solihull Moors. After the tournament, Avon Valley asked us for a quick friendly which was really fun. Mr Phillips and Dr Brown were so proud of our students, who showed both great skill, and great team spirit. We all wish Harris the best of luck for the finals.

We are really excited about football for next season, and all KS3 are welcome. We would like to explore a KS4 team too. There will be some exciting and inclusive opportunities coming up through Harris School, so if you used to play or have never played before, or play several times a week,  please consider football training at a lunchtime (tbc) from September.

Travel
by Edna St Vincent Millay

The railroad track is miles away,
And the day is loud with voices speaking,
Yet there isn’t a train goes by all day
But I hear its whistle shrieking.

All night there isn’t a train goes by,
Though the night is still for sleep and dreaming,
But I see its cinders red on the sky,
And hear its engine steaming.

My heart is warm with the friends I make,
And better friends I’ll not be knowing;
Yet there isn’t a train I wouldn’t take,
No matter where it’s going.
