Rugby High School - Spring 2021 Issue 26

News from Mr Grady

Hello Everyone,

Well, we are nearly at the end of our last full week of this term, as we only have four days of school next week before the Easter Break.

Now is the time to think about how one may make use of the holiday to relax, refresh and rebuild to be ready for the Summer term.  Now is the time to take the chance to look at what work needs doing, and consider how it might be done, or if needed consider talking to a teacher, parent or friend if you are looking at the Easter break and thinking “I just won’t have time for a break.”  I said the same to colleagues in our video briefing – now is the time we can help if you just can’t see where the “space” will be over Easter.  Please do take the time to think about that and ask for support or guidance if needed!

I am doing just this, as very often, I’m very good at giving out the sensible advice, but then not following it myself.  I have a couple of garden-projects in hand, to which end I have bought a “mitre-Saw.”  Those of you that will remember my newsletters describing my clumsiness at DIY may well be worried on my behalf, and quite frankly, you’d be right.  I’m worried on my behalf, but am determined to get a bit crafty and creative with some wood-based activity.  I can’t think what is better designed to ensure that my mind does not dwell on work, but gets itself “into the moment” than a blade spinning at 3000RPM.  Whatever that means – I assume “fast.”

And that’s the point of the “space to think” that I’m talking about.   I don’t really have much of a sense of the building I’m going to do, other than a couple of plant boxes, and something to do with an old fence post and panel that needs repair.  I’m sure I’ll work it out when I get there.  What I am doing though, is looking at my list of things to do and prioritising the immediate, the medium and the long term, and yes, there are probably more immediate things than I would like, but if I get a clear plan together, then I can rest assured that everything will get done – or I can have conversations with the people involved in things that might need extensions, or (whisper this) may not get done at all.

So, as I prepare the first aid box in readiness for my inevitable personal injury, and as I wander round the house looking for other things that I might be able to use the new saw on, do take the time to think about how you can take a bit of control of YOUR to do list, so that A) it doesn’t feel as daunting, B) you’ve had chance to chat to people and get their support for re-prioritising or even removing items from it and C) have planned where you will make that all important “recharging time” over Easter to recharge for the Summer term.

Have a great week, stay well and safe everyone,

With very best wishes,
Mr Grady

Our Assessment Calendar for Years 10, 12, 7, 8 and 9

You will be aware that Year 11 and 13 GCSE and A level examinations are not taking place this year and that teachers and students in these year groups are now beginning the process of collecting evidence to support this year’s grading. This has significantly impacted on teacher workload and we now have new deadlines to work to. This all affects the way in which we will be able to manage end of year assessments in the summer for other year groups.  We have therefore made some changes to the assessment schedule.

Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will not have formal exam weeks this summer as in previous years, but will instead sit in-class assessments during their lessons. Students will be informed by their subject teachers when these will happen. Subject teachers will let students know what they will need to revise and give them advice on how to do so, over the coming weeks. Progress will be reported on via final progress checks before the end of the summer term.

Students in Years 10 and 12 will have a series of formal examinations. For year 10, these will take place from 7th to 18th June, and for Year 12, from 21st June to 2ndJuly.

If you have any queries, please contact Yvette Grogan for students in Years 7 - 11 and Olga Dermott-Bond for students in Sixth Form.

Uniform and Hair Colour

It has been great to see students returning to school and settling back in so well. There are however some varied interpretations of our uniform.  After the Easter break we would be grateful if you could support your child in returning to school in the correct school uniform.  Students should no longer be wearing non-uniform hoodies/ sweatshirts in addition to their uniform, and trousers / skirts must comply with our uniform policy. Blazers must be worn.  We ask also that students return with natural hair colour.   We hope that three weeks' notice is sufficient time for natural hair colour to be restored.  Thank you in advance for your support with this.

Summer Term

As detailed on our school calendar, please note that the summer term ends for students on Friday July 16th 2021.

For Year 13 Parents

Last Thursday evening Warwick University gave a talk to Year 13 parents on student finance.

For anyone who missed it there is a link on the Sixth Form section of RHS website under student finance to the powerpoint  ' Supporting a student with finance'

Virtual Visit from Oxford University

This Wednesday, Barnaby Taylor, a professor of Classics at the University of Oxford, virtually visited the Year 11 Latin class in order to answer questions regarding the topic of magic and superstition; which the class is currently studying. During his hour visit, the professor replied to the Year 11's questions about Roman stereotypes about witchcraft, how their prejudices led to certain beliefs and scepticism surrounding certain superstitions such as augury and haruspices. The visit was not only enjoyable but also informative and useful for the Year 11’s studies.
