Rugby High School - Autumn 2020 Issue 6

News from Mr Grady

Hello Everyone!

On Friday we have our planning day, which normally we would have in June, but for obvious reasons had to be a bit shifted. It’s the time when we reflect on what we’ve achieved and where we want to go next, including continuing to build our remote learning capacity. And it’s really important that we do take the time to think about the whole year, and dare I say it, even the following one!

It has been very easy to get caught in the “day by day” approach we’ve had to take (again for obvious reasons) and the immediate challenges we’ve had to plan for and rise to in our own inimitable fashion, but it’s also important to think about our longer term plans and consider how we can continue to maintain our ethos and vision for RHS as the very special institution that it is! To this end, one of the things on Friday that staff will be looking at is our vision statement. I’ve shared it below, and please do drop me a line with any thoughts. Students can feedback through their form tutors.

The writing of such a statement always fills me with a bit of dread, as how on earth do you capture all we do in a small paragraph, to be shared with our community? One instinctively feels that any short paragraph trying to sum up over 900 students and over 100 staff and all the families with whom we work will simply not address everything you want it to. But the key thing is the RHS spirit: Is it caught in the phrases we’ve chosen?

And that spirit has been on show down the years and never more so than the last 6 months.

Remember such a statement isn’t just for the students with us now, but for previous students and students to come. So: Have a look at our first attempt below, see if you think it describes RHS as you know it. I think it captures the spirit of what we do here, and although not every sentence might apply to you, I hope you feel part of the shared vision of our school, and look forward to continuing to work with us in making this vision a reality for every member of our community.

Stay well and safe everyone!

Mr Grady

OUR VISION

At Rugby High School, we set heights in our heart.

While striving for excellence for all, in all its forms, our aim as a school is to encourage our students to be ambitious and creative thinkers, to face challenges, to work together, to learn to apply and adapt their skills so that they are prepared and excited for the future, whatever it may bring.

We want our students to understand what it is to show compassion and empathy and to take responsibility as brave, independent global citizens.

We want to help all our students to leave us knowing how to be Resilient, Happy and Successful.

Inspired by their curiosity and love for learning our students will leave us with a confident voice, ready to take their place, knowing that their actions have the potential to change the world.

Financial Help for Year 11 students wanting to study STEM subjects at A-level with the aim of a career in Engineering

Arkwright Engineering Scholarships provide financial support, mentoring, exclusive events and work experience opportunities to ambitious students persuing a career in engineering!

Our Scholarships support students through their sixth form studies, who apply during year 11 (England & Wales); S4 (Scotland) or year 12 (Northern Ireland), giving students a variety of enrichment opportunities and £600 to enhance their studies. The title ‘Arkwright Engineering Scholar’ is an accolade that will benefit your students’ applications to university, higher apprenticeships and jobs.

Students are not the only ones to benefit from the scheme. If a scholarship is awarded, your school also receives a £400 financial reward, which could be put towards STEM events or equipment to benefit the school.  The Scholarships’ prestige is also a good way to raise your schools’ profile within the community, and to achieve national recognition.

Black History Month

Throughout October, students at Rugby High School are taking part in a variety of activities in recognition of Black History Month. As well as celebrating the lives and achievements of a number of black individuals, students will be exploring some of the important historical events that formed part of the British Civil Rights Movement. During form times, our students will be watching Alt History: a series of short films, presented by writer and historian David Olusoga.

A Story Writing Success for Neha

“My history lessons inspired me to write this story.”  Neha Anand in Year 7 recently found out that she was awarded second place in Rotary’s National Young Writer Competition 2020, a 500 word fiction writing competition whose theme this year was ‘connections’.

It took Neha 3 weeks to perfect her story that takes the form of a letter from the Greek God Janus complaining to Zeus of his seeming inability to  help the Gods to work together and to connect with each other.
