Rugby High School - Summer 2020 Issue 39

News from Mrs Grimes

Hello Everyone,

This week, it has been a very different week from what had become our normal. As we have re-opened our doors to Year 10 and some of our Year 12s, it has been really good to see and hear the buzz of students in our classrooms again. It has been great too, to reconnect with colleagues as we take the first steps back to school.

Back to School, after the usual long summer break, is usually something which we look forward to with a mixture of nervous excitement and perhaps a little bit of apprehension. We have certainly seen much of both this week. However, we have, for the most part, settled quickly back into school, despite the different kind of structure to the day, and the new social distancing rules. Year 10 students have followed lessons in Maths and English, and caught up with some of their options teachers.  Year 12 are spending time following subject specific days. I want to reassure those of you who haven’t yet returned that despite the differences, the essence of our school is still the same and we can’t wait to see more of you back with us.

As more of ‘normal’ life comes out of its hibernation, I have started to think about the elements of lockdown I’d like to keep. I have enjoyed a break from the hectic nature of life before. My family and I, like many others I am sure, have got into the routine of taking a daily walk or cycle ride, and while it has become a bit of a battle to get my children out every day, it’s worth it. Instead of TV, I have read more and have learnt to take time out. So I wonder, as another ‘new normal’ settles in, what elements of lockdown life will we keep hold of to keep us balanced?

Year 13 Book Return

Can parents please be aware that all Year 13 students who have any school books must return them the week beginning 6th July.

Returning all texts book is essential and we appreciate your son/ daughter's co-operation with this. The teaching staff are already planning for next year’s classes and these text books amount to thousands of pounds of resources.

Students have all been sent an email detailing at time and day they need to return their books: it has been organised so students can be safe whilst on school premises.

Many thanks for your continued support,

Olga Dermott-Bond
Assistant Head Teacher & Head of Sixth Form

Help to Protect Against Serious Vaccine-preventable Diseases

During Covid-19 local GPs have reported a drop in the uptake of pregnancy, infant and pre-school booster vaccinations in Warwickshire.

Attending routine vaccination appointments is important, as it helps to stop an outbreak of serious vaccine-preventable diseases such as Measles, Meningitis and whooping cough.

If you are pregnant or have young children, it’s important that you continue to attend your scheduled vaccination appointments on time. If you cancelled these appointments during lockdown, please rebook now.

Your GP surgery will have all the necessary precautions in place to keep you and your child safe from COVID-19. If you have any questions about the steps they have put in place, why not talk to the receptionist to help ease your concerns.

Attending your routine vaccination appointments not only protects you and your children from very serious illnesses, but also protects more vulnerable people who would be at very great risk if they were to contract these diseases.

If you’re unsure about the schedule and when vaccinations are due, check your child’s Red Book or visit: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/nhs-vaccinations-and-when-to-have-them/

What's a STEM Course?

Each year you may periodically see various STEM courses advertised in the newsletter or get an email from me alerting you to a STEM course.  STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.  These are areas where there are great career opportunities and there are lots of organisations who run courses either free or heavily subsidised to enable you to explore whether these subjects are something for you.

Ellen Morley in Year 11 is currently enrolled in 2 courses and this is what her experience has been like so far:

"I'm getting on well with the INSPIRE uni course, and I am finding the information about STEM courses at university really interesting.  I attended my first live session yesterday which was a GE careers Q&A session, and there were 4 speakers from different jobs within GE talking about their career paths and current job.  I found it interesting and took the chance to ask a couple of questions. I have also registered for about 8 different other live sessions, which I am looking forward to.  I am also on the Digital Explorers course, which I have enjoyed so far. It is nice to also look at the technology and digital side of STEM as I haven't explored that as much."

INSPIRE is a course run by the Engineering Development Trust (EDT) and GE is the major Engineering company in Rugby who make global electricity generation equipment. The EDT organisation run the Go4SET projects and the Engineering Education Scheme; two annual projects we run at school which you will no doubt have heard of.  Smallpeice run great STEM courses for students too.  Do keep an eye out in the future for further opportunities as students always give me great feedback after completing these courses.

DNA to Diagnostic Test - Online Workshop

An interactive online lecture and hands-on practical session exploring the use of DNA genome sequences to design a diagnostic PCR test.

This 90-minute workshop is developed and presented by scientists at the Wellcome Sanger Institute in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire and it is aimed primarily at A-level students who have a basic understanding of DNA, the “instruction manual of life”.

You will learn how DNA sequence data is used by biologists to devise tests that can detect an organism in a lab sample. Using a popular web-based DNA editor tool that is used by researchers for real-life projects, you will be able to follow the instructions and design your own diagnostic test.

Attendees will require internet access but there is no need to install any software other than an up-to-date web browser.

This is a free live-streamed session.

'Important and deeply moving' JOHN GREEN
'Timely and timeless' JACQUELINE WOODSON

Jade is a girl striving for success in a world that seems like it's trying to break her.

She knows she needs to take every opportunity that comes her way. And she has: every day Jade rides the bus away from her friends to a private school where she feels like an outsider, but where she has plenty of opportunities.

But some opportunities Jade could do without, like the mentor programme for 'at-risk' girls. Just because her mentor is black doesn't mean she understands where Jade is coming from. Why is Jade always seen as someone to fix? But with a college scholarship promised at the end of it, how can Jade say no?

Jade feels like her life is made up of hundreds of conflicting pieces. Will it ever fit together? Will she ever find her place in the world? More than anything, Jade just wants the opportunity to be real, to make a difference.
