Rugby High School - Summer 2020 Issue 36

News from Mrs Grimes

Hello everyone!

Mr Grady has passed the job of writing for the newsletter over to me for a couple of weeks.  I know that you all enjoy his cheery words each week so I hope that you don’t mind the temporary change of author!

Lockdown has indeed been at time during which most of us have learnt to do things differently, our day to day has been turned upside down, our kitchen tables have become offices and study spaces and we have had to do jobs that we have not had to do before. Like writing for the newsletter, or cutting our children’s hair!

These strange and challenging weeks have been a time when we have started to listen to and take notice of things that we perhaps didn’t see before. Many of us have commented on how we’ve actually noticed Spring turn to Summer, heard more birdsong and taken time to reflect on the little things in life which in normal, busier times pass us by.

Some have referred to this time as a pause, a pivotal time for us to think about and effect real and positive change.  Events of recent weeks have opened our eyes to the bigger things, wrongs which need to be righted and injustices which need to be addressed and for the most part it is the young people in our community who are calling for change.  Despite us working remotely, I am proud of the way our Sixth Form prefects are pulling together to raise awareness within our school community of important issues which touch us all.

As we move into an easing of lockdown I know that the RHS community will not stop listening. There is a world around us which needs to be heard.

Mrs Grimes

The Office for Students - Students in KS5 & 6

The Office for Students (OfS) is the regulator for universities and colleges in England, and is now recruiting for eight vacancies on its student panel.

The panel exists to bring a student perspective to the OfS's work, and to help shape and challenge developing higher education policy. It is important that students influence the OfS's work and the decisions it takes so it can regulate effectively in their interests, and this very much includes those who are thinking of going into higher education in the future, who in many cases will be the ones to experience the impact of the changes they help to make.

Being on the panel will give you an opportunity to be heard at a national level and develop new skills, confidence and knowledge. Panel members are paid £1,200 a year with all travel expenses to attend meetings (usually in London) covered. The expected time commitment is 6-9 days per year, with panel members being recruited for one year initially with the possibility of extension to two years. For More Information

The team are very happy to discuss the roles on an informal basis so please email studentengagement@officeforstudents.org.uk if you have any questions.

National Theatre at Home

National Theatre at Home launched on YouTube on April 2, and now, every Thursday (7pm) sees a new National Theatre play released – free to watch for one week – along with bonus content including cast and creatives Q&As and post-stream talks.

What’s on this week?

National Theatre at Home: The Madness of George III

Alan Bennett's multi-award-winning drama produced by Nottingham Playhouse.

Written by one of Britain’s best-loved playwrights Alan Bennett (The History Boys, The Lady in the Van), this epic play was also adapted into a BAFTA Award-winning film following its premiere on stage in 1991.

The cast of this new production includes Olivier Award-winners Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Wolf Hall, NT Live Coriolanus) in the title role, and Adrian Scarborough (Gavin and Stacey, Upstairs Downstairs, After the Dance).

It’s 1786 and King George III is the most powerful man in the world. But his behaviour is becoming increasingly erratic as he succumbs to fits of lunacy. With the King’s mind unravelling at a dramatic pace, ambitious politicians and the scheming Prince of Wales threaten to undermine the power of the Crown, and expose the fine line between a King and a man.

BBFC rating for cinemas: 12A

From 7pm 11 June until 18 June
Running Time: 2 hours 10 minutes including a short interval

KS3 Book Recommendation

When it comes to flying under the radar, Ro Snow is the expert. No friends. No boys. No parties. And strictly NO VISITORS. It may be lonely but at least this way the truth remains where it should - hidden. Then Tanvi Shah, the girl who almost died, comes tumbling back into her life and Ro finds herself losing control of her carefully constructed lies. Because if Ro's walls come crumbling down, who's going to take care of Bonnie... Bonnie. Never Mum or Mummy or Mother. Just Bonnie.
