Rugby High School - Spring 2020 Issue 31

News from Mr Grady

Hello Everyone!

Well, this week we find ourselves 75 years on from VE day.  Now, as a Coventry-born boy, the Second World War and its impact on the home front was very much a thing of my early years - Coventry having been so devastated by the Blitz. I had relatives who had lived through a time that was by turns frightening, appalling, tragic, but also, according to their stories, in a strange way uplifting.

When people talk about the "Blitz Spirit" I had two grand-parents who knew what that was first-hand.

My grandmother had an Anderson shelter at the bottom of her garden, and I remember sitting under the very flimsy corrugated iron and thinking that it didn't look like it would stand a stiff breeze, let alone high explosives.

Those of us in my generation, certainly in Coventry, knew what it was to honour those who had lived through a very dark period, as we all had living relatives who had come through it, and we all had stories of friends or family who hadn't.

On Friday, when you see the variety of bunting, when you take part, remotely in tea-parties, or sing "we'll meet again" out of your windows, it's not a dry historical thing we're doing, it is a human connection that we're making, to all of the people that lived and died through a very dark six year period in this nation's history.

I know things may be tough and scary at the moment, they may be filled with doubt or worry, but the very fact that on Friday we will remember a moment of national relief and celebration 75 years ago should give us all hope.

So I hope that you sing lustily along with the nation words that perhaps have a more immediate ring than the melancholy we sometimes associate with Vera Lynn's song:

"We'll meet again, don't know where, don't know when...but I know we'll meet again, some sunny day."

I hope you're all staying well and safe,

Best wishes,
Mr Grady

First Published Piece For Year 10 Poet

I’m Elise Scotney in Year 10. Earlier this year I was shortlisted for Warwickshire Young Poet Laureate and through the selection day I discovered the Felix Dennis Creative Writing Competition. It is run annually as part of the Stratford Literary Festival in honour of the late poet and publisher Felix Dennis. It encourages young people aged 5 to 21 to write poems on any subject and boasts cash prizes of up to £300! The winning and best poems are also featured in a special Festival collection that should be on sale in Waterstones Stratford-Upon-Avon (obviously this is now closed for the lockdown). Although I didn’t get placed, I was included in the collection and this is the first time that one of my poems has been published! I am extremely grateful and very excited to be able to call myself a published poet. Here is my poem, I hope you enjoy reading it...

Senior Creative Writing Club

Just send Mrs DB an email and she will join you to the club: we meet on a Thursday 1:30- 2:15 via Microsoft Teams.

This week's wonderful poem is by Niamh Chalmers.

National Theatre at Home

National Theatre at Home launched on YouTube on April 2, and now, every Thursday (7pm) sees a new National Theatre play released – free to watch for one week – along with bonus content including cast and creatives Q&As and post-stream talks.

What’s on this week? Antony & Cleopatra

Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient, James Bond: Spectre) and Sophie Okonedo (Chimerica, Hotel Rwanda) play Shakespeare’s famous fated couple in his great tragedy of politics, passion and power.

Caesar and his assassins are dead. General Mark Antony now rules alongside his fellow defenders of Rome. But at the fringes of a war-torn empire the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra and Mark Antony have fallen fiercely in love. In a tragic fight between devotion and duty, obsession becomes a catalyst for war.

Simon Godwin (Hansard, Twelfth Night) directed this critically acclaimed production at the National Theatre in 2018. You can watch Antony & Cleopatra on the National Theatre’s YouTube channel from 7pm UK time on Thursday 7 May for one week.  This is particularly useful for students studying A Level English Literature as it’s one of their set texts!

This filmed performance was given a BBFC rating of 12A and contains some staged violence and flashing lights.

But when her first song goes viral for all the wrong reasons, Bri finds herself at the centre of controversy and portrayed by the media as more menace than MC. And with an eviction notice staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it – she has to. Even if it means becoming the very thing the public has made her out to be.
