News from Mr Grady

Thursday 21st May 2026

Hello everyone,

I’m writing this on the bus back, after a brilliant day out at the Black Country Living Museum with the entirety of year 8.

We have been treated to a Victorian schoolroom, with a stern teacher ensuring we understood the three Rs: Reading; (W)riting and Reckoning, where the students were told that only the brightest sibling in a family would go to school. When asked, those with siblings firmly stated that they were in the correct place! Several staff were pulled up for their behaviour in this session and received the cane!

In the mine, we were treated to several science experiments demonstrating the dangers of both methane and carbon monoxide. The explosion of methane took us all by surprise, and gave the members of the science department with us definite ideas for future experiments. Although 21st century fire and smoke alarms may hamper this! The students were pretty horrified to hear about the use of canaries in the detection of gases.

We watched lots of manufacturing, at the chain makers and nail makers, and of hammer heads in the foundry.

We also visited back-to-back houses, and the local hardware shop, learning about cooking, and day-to-day life at the turn of the twentieth century. The students were very taken by the mangle as the Victorian tumble dryer of its day. They were less impressed with the outdoor and basic toilet facilities, the privies.

The students took great joy in seeing the pigs and the chickens, the horses, sweet shop, fish and chip shop and Victorian fair.

With our older students currently in the exam halls sitting their GCSEs and A-levels, it was such a joy to remember that learning happens just as effectively outside the classroom, and often makes more lasting memories.

A huge thank you to Mr Phillips for organising and all the staff who came along to support! Our students, as one would expect, were wonderful company for the day, and I lost count of how many people complimented them on their behaviour!

Now. I hope the traffic on the M6 is kind to us and the gods of transport are on our side…

Stay well and safe everyone,

Best wishes,
Mr Grady

PTA Uniform Sale

The next PTA Uniform Sale will be held on Saturday 11th July 2026, between 10am - 12pm. This is your opportunity to make a huge saving by buying good quality pre-used uniforms for your daughter and play your part in raising money for the school.

Do you have any items of uniform that you could donate to the PTA for this outgrown but not outworn uniform sale?

Please ensure that your donated items are clean and that you have removed all name tags. Items can be sent to school with your daughter and handed in at reception. Please don’t donate anything that you would not want your own daughter to wear.

We are grateful to receive blazers, jumpers, blouses, skirts, trousers, PE hoodies, PE shirts, skorts, leggings, football boots, ballet shoes, text books and any other outgrown but not outworn items.

All proceeds will go to the PTA which provides funding for academic and non-academic related activities for our students. You can find more information about the PTA here - www.rugbyhighschool.co.uk/PTA

So, please come into school on Saturday 11th July between 10am - 12pm to make huge savings on outgrown, but not outworn, uniforms!

Free 11+ support

We are again partnering with Atom Learning to provide free access to Atom Home (normally £575.90/year) to all Pupil Premium eligible students in Key Stage 2 (ages 7-11).

As we are proud to welcome students from all backgrounds to Rugby High, this partnership aims to encourage even greater representation at our school while also supporting under-resourced families in our community. There is also a free trial available for non-pupil premium families.

If you know a family preparing for the 11+ who may benefit from accessing free preparation materials, please share this information with them.

What is Atom Home?

Atom Home is an online platform that supports KS2 learning and 11+ preparation through practice questions, video tutorials, and mock tests. It helps children build confidence with KS2 objectives and, where relevant, prepare for 11+ exams.

How do families sign up?

If you know someone whose child is preparing for the 11+, or is in need of Key Stage 2 learning support, please share this link with them: www.rugbyhighschool.co.uk/admissions/free11plusmaterials

After completing the form on this page, their primary school will be asked to verify their pupil premium eligibility. Their Atom Home account will then be created.

Charles Causley
Tell me, tell me, Sarah Jane

Tell me, tell me, Sarah Jane,
Tell me, dearest daughter,
Why are you holding in your hand
A thimbleful of water?
Why do you hold it to your eye
And gaze both late and soon
From early morning light until
The rising of the moon?

Mother, I hear the mermaids cry,
I hear the mermen sing,
And I can see the sailing-ships
All made of sticks and string.
And I can see the jumping fish,
The whales that fall and rise
And swim about the waterspout
That swarms up to the skies.

Tell me, tell me, Sarah Jane,
Tell your darling mother,
Why do you walk beside the tide
As though you loved none other?
Why do you listen to a shell
And watch the billows curl,
And throw away your diamond ring
And wear instead the pearl?

Mother, I hear the water
Beneath the headland pinned,
And I can see the sea-gull
Sliding down the wind.
I taste the salt upon my tongue
As sweet as sweet can be.

Tell me, my dear, whose voice you hear?

It is the sea, the sea.
