News from Mr Grady

28th September 2023

Hello Everyone,

This week, we celebrate a range of cultural diversity in school, with European day of languages, and of course, our “Diversity Day” on Friday this week, an event that this year is only three years old, but already a fixed and traditional part of our calendar that I cannot possibly imagine not happening.

On Friday, our whole community will celebrate the diverse nature of the community, reflected in the way we dress, what we’re eating and a wonderful set of performances during Friday lunchtime.

Our diversity prefects have ensured that this year will be the biggest celebration yet, and we simply can’t wait to come together as a school in an event of such joy and inclusivity.

There will be a great many pictures of the event taken during the day, and I challenge anyone not to see what we do on this day and not be overwhelmed by the wonderful nature of our school community.

For those students new to RHS, you will not have seen anything like this, and it is a thing of great pride to me that students who’ve joined us so often say how great the day is, and how they wish their previous school offered not just a day like this, but the continued celebration of diversity that they have already experienced.

It is so instrumental to all we do here at RHS, not just that everyone is “accepted” and “tolerated” but that everyone here is seen, heard and celebrated, and that is they don’t feel that has been happening, that they feel able to talk to an older student, a student leader or a staff member to address this.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day on Friday, and look forward to seeing the very best of RHS front and centre!

With all best wishes,

Mr Grady

Sports Day - take two

The weather in a July was very unkind to us, with heavy downpours descending just 40mins before Sports Day was due to start, cancelling the event. We promised to reschedule, and on Monday 25th September we delivered...as did the Sun! We had glorious weather for what was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of competitive sport. The sounds of loud cheers and rapturous applause did not stop for the whole 2.5 hours. The event being accompanied by a playlist designed with our Cultural Diversity week in mind, also had the crowds bouncing!

During the afternoon we had a whopping 22 individual school records broken, as well as 3 relay records. Some competitors now holding 2 or 3 records in total.

Records broken

Year 8 records
Emily Gascoigne - 400m
Florrie Kinsella - Discus

Thomas Watson - 400m
Alex Kilby - 800m
Felix Farmer - Javelin
Mazvita Madziba - High Jump

Points and places were hotly contested, and everyone entered with great competitive spirit, but also with kindness, care and respect for their opponents, and the staff marshalling the events.

The Great European Bake Off

This Tuesday was European Day of Languages and to celebrate we held the Great European Bake Off. We had an amazing selection of cakes and were blown away by the creativity we saw and the number of entries. Judging took place at breaktime and winner of the Traditional European Cake Award was the Sicilian Orange cake. Winner of the Creative Showstopper Award was the Spaghetti and Meatballs cake! And winner of the Year 13 Student Choice Award was the Pan-European cupcakes. Two cakes were also Highly Commended - the Beans on Toast cake and the Cup of Tea cake!

Well done to everyone who entered and to our winners!

Astrophysics Guidance

Last week Caitlin Hanna, an ex-student, joined some our Year 13s to give them some guidance on Astrophysics at University. Caitlin has completed the 3rd year of her 4 year Masters Degree in Astrophysics at Leicester University. She was able to give an insight into university life, the application process and what the course involves. It is always great to hear how well ex-students are doing and its fabulous how much they still keep in touch and want to help those still at school!

Phoenix Rise

Year 10 student Isla Jamieson has featured in the latest season of Phoenix Rise, a show on BBC Iplayer/BBC 3. Look out for her in a number of scenes (above you can spot her with her pink backpack)! The show focuses on six outsiders who learn the only way they are going to survive school is by sticking together - but can you ever really leave your past behind? It was filmed locally, in and around Coventry, including some of the city's iconic landmarks and also at former Further Education campus, Henley College.

The Dogs

Some mornings, waking up between the sandy whippet
and the black - their breathing as slow as mine,
their eyes more sorrowful - I remind myself I'm not a dog.

It's not acceptable to taste the grass or roll in moss until
I'm musked with it. There are deer in the woods I'll never see.
My thirst discriminates. It does not have me bend

my grateful head to puddles, gutters, hollows
in the rock. I don't track rabbits in my sleep.
I'll not know love like theirs, observed in mute proximity

and if I sometimes sit bolt upright after dark, sensing
a movement in the yard, it's only that I've learned
a little of their vigilance. I'm not like them:

one night I'll set off past the meadow, down
behind the beck, beyond the blunt profile of Silver Howe
and nobody will call me back.
