December 2019 Friends Newsletter

Welcome to our Autumn Newsletter.  This has been a jam packed term, punctuated by three events to mark our 100 Year anniversary.  The first of these was this aerial photo of the whole school assembled out on the field.  No mean feat!  Well done to our new Head Teacher, Mark Grady, for organising!

At Rugby High, as you know, we never miss an opportunity for dressing up.  So our second event was a celebration of inspirational figures from the last 100 years.  Students and staff, in particular, dressed up as figures such as Gandhi, Zandra Rhodes, Billie Jean King, the Queen and Olive Hands (the founding Head Teacher of RHS). A wonderfully colourful day!

FOUNDATION DAY

Foundation Day - the occasion on which we  welcome back the hardworking Y11 and Y13 students of 2018-19’s  to commend them on their GCSE and A Level results.

As a special centenary treat, plans had been in place to host Evelyn Glennie as guest speaker (whose name is borne by one of our Houses).  But luck was not with us -  she became caught in a road closure on the A14 and was unable to get to us on time!

In the usual Rugby High manner, we took the change in proceedings in our stride and went on to enjoy a beautiful performance by Sophie Costa in Y8 on the harp and gorgeous singing from our newly formed choir.

Afterwards, guests were welcomed into the hall for a special display of RHS memorabilia and stunning art work from our students - not to mention a glass of mulled wine!

What A Levels did you take? Economics, Maths and French

Who was your favourite teacher? Mrs Moore (French)

What is your best memory? Going to Lawrence Sherriff for Economics was always fun. Or our Cluedo themed Decorated Classroom.

What are you doing now? I work at Santander Corporate Banking as a Relationship Manager in London, supporting a portfolio of large corporate clients in the Leisure industry. I have been in banking for 5 years and enjoy all the Challenges of the role, especially line managing 3 Apprentices.

If you could give advice to your 16 year old self, what would it be? You don’t have to be the smartest person in the class to be successful. Make contacts and friends wherever you are, and you never know who will need to call in a favour from.

Season's Greetings to you all!
