News from Mr Grady

3rd November 2022

Hello Everyone,

I hope you managed to have a restful and/or productive half term, and that those of you celebrating Diwali over the break had the chance to celebrate and come to together with family and friends and really enjoy the occasion.

The clocks going back over this break always brings that definite shift into Autumn, and as the mornings and evenings feel a little darker, getting out of bed, and journeying into school and home in the dark can really shape how you’re feeling about the days and weeks ahead.  During this week, and next all students will be discussing in their form groups what their “commitments” will be, so that, in line with our vision they can continue working to be “Resilient, Successful and Healthy this term.”

Students need to think about a variety of statements, based on their experience of the first half term, and whether you’re year 7 just starting to feel settled into school or a year 13 student, busily writing UCAS applications, and thinking about putting a foot outside the safety of RHS, we think the statements really help to focus us in our thinking.  As adults too, these sorts of moments of reflection and commitment can also help us to shape how we approach each day or task or challenge.  The statements we’re asking students to consider are:

To be Resilient, Successful and Healthy this term, I must…; I will…; I’ll try to…; I hope to…; I’ll be pleased if…; I know I’ll have been successful when…; I’ll avoid…; I will not…

I think this approach is a great way of taking the time to make some commitments to yourself, but also, with the variety of statements also give yourself the chance to be flexible and honest about what you realistically can achieve, and how you might do that.  For the adults reading, I wonder if you’ll make some commitments too, as we’re asking the students to?

My form will be completed and stuck on my office door for all to see in the coming week.  You can see what I’ll be committing to, and I look forward to seeing what our students commit to and achieve in the coming weeks too!

Stay well and safe everyone,

With all best wishes,
Mr Grady

A Great Season for the Dragonesses

Rugby High School girls from Years, 8, 11 and 6th form formed a key part of the amazing success of the old Laurentian Dragonesses last season. The Dragonesses play in the West Midlands Girls Tag League where player ages range from 8 to 17 and teams come from Kenilworth, Coventry, Keresley, King’s Norton, Bournville and Evesham. Last season the girls scored one second place and two thirds giving them third place in the league overall.

The highlight of the season came right at the end of the season at the Evesham Festival. After a long day, the girls found themselves in the semi-final where they played Kings Norton B. However, things didn’t go to plan in the first half & at half-time the game was tied at 2-2. Now the girls got really serious and took it upon themselves to turn things round. In the second half they played mistake-free Rugby, winning 7-3. They went on to lose in the final against King’s Norton A, but the average age of the squad is 12. Well done!

In the photo, Rugby High girls are:
Back row, 3rd from the left Aveline Desdoits-Pitman (Y11) 5th, Eva Newson (with her sister on her shoulders, Y11) 7th, Brooke Curry (Y11) 10th Imogen Angell (6th Form). Front row, 3rd Rebecca Pope (Y11), 5th Oliwia Edwards (Y8), 6th Floss Wallis (Y8).

What If This Road
Sheenagh Pugh

What if this road, that has held no surprises
these many years, decided not to go
home after all; what if it could turn
left or right with no more ado
than a kite-tail? What if its tarry skin
were like a long, supple bolt of cloth,
that is shaken and rolled out, and takes
a new shape from the contours beneath?
And if it chose to lay itself down
in a new way, around a blind corner,
across hills you must climb without knowing
what’s on the other side, who would not hanker
to be going, at all risks? Who wants to know
a story’s end, or where a road will go?
