Rugby High School - Autumn 2019 Issue 10

News from Mr Grady

Hello everyone.

Last Friday evening was our much-loved Winter Fair.  Or to be pleasingly Victorian about it: Winter Fayre.

Once again, the school was awash with colourful stalls and activities, and the excited buzz and bustle of students competing to raise as much money as possible for their chosen charities.  This year we had the added pleasure of live music throughout the event, and it completed the array of pleasures playing on our senses, from the smells and taste of the delicious food on offer to the sights of some particularly effective stall-decorations, and the physical games you could pit your finer motor-skills against.

What a jolly event it is, a Rugby High School staple, and the harbinger of the Christmas season in full.

What is particularly pleasing is the ensemble effort (for those of you who read this newsletter regularly, you’ll already have spotted this is a theme close to my heart) of the Winter Fayre.  Under the direction of the ever-calm Miss Holland, and with the tireless support of the PTA the fayre springs to life – students working hard at selling their goods, Staff supporting and the PTA raising bucketloads of cash with their grand raffle.

The PTA really are an amazing group of parents, supported by Miss Holland Mrs Grimes – over the years their fundraising has ensured a huge range of “extras” for students to experience that school budgets simply do not stretch to – new Art Kilns, Operation Theatre Live, Digital Theatre, the Maths Challenge, are just a few of the contributions to the school this dedicated team has provided.  They’ve been instrumental in supporting the social experiences of students, staff and parents and quite simply RHS would not be the same without them!

I’d like to offer a heartfelt thanks to Miss Holland and the PTA for such a great event, and look forward to next years!

Best wishes,
Mr Grady

Scholastic Book Fair:

Once again we will be offering students the opportunity to treat themselves with some wonderful books at great prices via the Scholastic Book Fair. The Fair will take place between Tuesday the 26th and Thursday the 28th of November, in the foyer, at lunchtimes. Books are very reasonably priced, with some great bargains available, starting at £3. Whilst the books are mostly suitable for KS3 students, some will appeal to both older and younger. There is also a range of smaller, fun stationery items.

Every student who buys a book will be entered into a raffle for the chance to win an extra book as a prize at the end of the week. Each KS3 English class will also have the opportunity during lesson times to visit the Fair and choose their books.

Your support of the book fair means that the English department are able to replenish and refresh the book cupboards, providing new and exciting texts for students to read, and also ensuring that we have full class sets of the texts we teach.

Rugby High School Sixth Form

Senior student team and prefect elections are underway!

This week, Sixth formers have submitted applications in their bid to have a post of responsibility in school. This year the Sixth Form team have expanded the roles of responsibility, and students have had the the opportunity to apply for either the role of Head Girl or Head Boy, or a Prefect role.

Our aim is to develop Leadership skills and further develop responsibility within our Sixth Form community. I am very excited to read the many applications we have had, so watch this space for further developments!

Well done to all students who have applied!

Olga Dermott-Bond
Head of Sixth Form

Game of Our Own

Last week Olivia Sam, Philippa Sayers and I attended a course entitled Game of Our Own at West Bromwich Albion FC project to become Football Activators. Our aim: to teach girls from across the UK effective ways to promote and advertise football within our schools to encourage more girls into football, a sport with a history of being mainly male-dominated. Many other schools also attended the course with us, allowing us to see a broad variety of different opinions and experiences regarding football.

The morning focused on improving our understanding our role as an activator. We were given a variety of promotional methods to help advertise and gain an understanding of our primary audience and discussed pros and cons of each method. We also considered the limitations and expectations many people have against girls' football, hearing how some girls attending the course were denied the right to play football, or shunned for wanting to participate in a sport they love because of their gender – this was quite upsetting. We also discussed how a girl’s own prejudice against the sport can also hold her back.   That afternoon we designed our own logo and created a short presentation that we delivered to all the schools, gaining confidence ourselves.

Back at RHS, we fully intend to implement all the skills and tactics we have learnt from it.  I have to admit, that I was definitely one of those girls who would groan when they saw football on the curriculum, but after joining the club, my interest in the sport has increased immensely and I’ve enjoyed every session. As a club, we are looking to generate more popularity for football by creating a community where anyone regardless of skill sets can join and have a good time.

KS3 Book Recommendation

'The ship was a towering fortress looming over the pier. Anton stared enviously at the emigrants lining up in front of the wide gangplank. Heading off on a voyage to a land of peace and plenty. Leaving the land of broken buildings and crushed hopes behind. Looking forward to sunshine and steaks. How he wished that he was one of the lucky ones.' Loosely based on Paul Jennings' journey to Australia as a 'ten pound Pom', the story of Anton, who escapes from an orphanage and successfully stows away on a boat headed for the land of 'sunshine and steaks' has a timeless reality of its own. It is a tale of loss, guilt, mistaken identity and taking risks but also surprisingly heartwarming and heartbreaking. Perfect for reluctant readers in upper primary and lower secondary, it speaks of loss, migration, resilience and courage. Beautifully illustrated by Geoff Kelly.
