April 2022 Friends Newsletter

Welcome to our Spring Newsletter.

"It was almost exactly 2 years ago that we closed the school under a huge weight of uncertainty in weather that was almost exactly the same - bright sunny days, with daffodils and magnolia blossoming. This week Spring has very much sprung again at RHS but this time, happily bringing us out of our two year hibernation. It has been a joy to see our students out playing, chatting, picnicking on our field at lunchtime, and enjoying the fresh Spring air, reminding us how fortunate we are to have such lovely open space to make the most of."

Jo Grimes, Deputy Headteacher

Old Girls

The membership of the Old Girls Association has been steadily declining.  It was therefore decided to bring the Association to a close.  Its remaining members have been notified and invited to join Friends of Rugby High.

Here is an excerpt from the message that Mark Grady, Headteacher, sent to them: : “RHS is always here.  We have worked with thousands and thousands of students, and most importantly, we’ve worked with you!  We remain here, a touchstone and whether you move on from Rugby, Warwickshire, or the UK, what we stand for, those aspirational heights we set in our hearts, and the ethos of kindness, care and respect with which we go about our daily lives, will remain.  We will always be eager to see and hear from you, to hear about your adventures post-RHS.” I hope we can continue to stay in touch.

Conservation Area

So it’s the turn of the Conservation area to receive some TLC.  You can see from these photos how nature has done its own thing around this pond.  It provides a wonderful habitiat for wildlife, and indeed we now have foxes nesting here as well!   Students, parents and staff are all involved in looking after this area, from being involved in work parties, taking part in gardening club and donating money and equipment.  We have also been gifted a donation of a large quantity of butyl liner from Winvic which is going to be used to reline this pond over the Easter holidays.

Gospel Lab

In memory and commemoration of Miss Gospel the Mendeleev lab has now been renamed "Gospel Lab". Even though her life was cruelly cut short, the positive impact that she had on others was greater than many people can achieve in a lifetime.  Her name will now live on in school in perpetuity.

Jane Danger, who has worked as Communications Manager at Rugby High for the last 7 years is leaving at Easter.  Jane started working at RHS to draw the Sports Hall fundraising campaign to a conclusion.  Since then she has worked in the communications role, assuming responsibility for the school’s external communications and helping to establish Friends of Rugby High.  Her replacement has yet to be appointed, but if you wish to contact the school please use the email address:  rhsamin@rugbyhighschool.co.uk until further notice.

Prize Giving - 2 evenings of celebrating the achievements of our GCSE and  A Level students in the main school hall.   We were so very fortunate to be able to welcome Gita Natarajan BEM, as our guest speaker.    Gita is responsible for having regenerated the Benn Community Partnership in Rugby that now has a national reputation as a trusted centre with an average daily footfall of around 1200 and as a centre of innovation and excellence in social engagement and learning. More recently, she assumed leadership of the Rugby’s vaccination programme at Locke House where 165,000 vaccinations were delivered, the highest in the region. Gita spoke of  equality, kindness and compassion, of being strong and doing the 'right' thing. Her overriding message to our students was that they are so well placed and equipped to be able to make a difference and a contribution to a more equitable society.

Wishing you all a very happy Ramadan and Easter!
