Rugby High School - Spring 2022 Issue 13

News from Mr Grady

Hello everyone,

Is it just me, or is there something about January that makes you feel like there’s just so much to be done? All those plans for the year feel like they need to get started, and if you’re not careful, you find yourself attacking each thing like a bat of hell, rushing to get everything finished, because you’ve got all these great plans, and they just need to get started, and for crying out loud, why can’t everyone just see that??!!??

If you’re not careful your aim to make changes and get something new going can really dominate, and not give you the chance to reflect and approach things calmly.

In order to counteract this “everything has to be done TODAY”, I have taken to giving myself a small list of: “If I’ve done these things, then it’s actually been a positive week.”  This seems to be helping, and reminding me that whatever plans I have, they don’t all have to be completed by the end of January.

My three things that will make it a positive week this week were; Try to get out for a run; make sure I got my newsletter in on time; and try to do something that puts me slightly ahead!  (Obviously, I have considerably more to do than that, but for my “has it been a good week” consideration, these were my three things…)

Well, I did manage to get my newsletter in on the deadline, and you’ll see from my topic this week, that I am slightly ahead.  I’ve yet to go out for a run.  Two out of three ain’t bad I suppose.

Importantly though, I’m slightly ahead of myself, because I wanted to use this newsletter to wish all those of you who will be celebrating it, the very happiest of Chinese New Year’s.

New Year’s Eve falls on 31st January, with New Year’s Day this year being 1st February.  We will be entering the year of the Tiger, and people born in a year of the Tiger are predicted to be brave, competitive, unpredictable, and confident.  The last year of the Tiger was 2010, which means, I imagine the year of birth for quiet a few of our Year 7 and 8 students.

Certainly, in working with those students, I can see some of those traits emerging, and in line with our aims here at RHS, we will hopefully continue to support them to be brave and confident.  I’m not quite sure where I stand on unpredictable, but I suppose we can all do with a bit of that sometimes!

I’m told that the Chinese New Year is celebrated with people going back home to be together with families, to eat, drink, and cook together, visit extended family and friends and exchange good wishes, and it feels, that as January draws to a close that it’s just the right time for a little of that: Good food with friends and family, and good wishes and fortune shared for the year to come, a little glimpse of the warm shoots of spring in the darkness of the winter.

Happy Chinese New Year for next Tuesday everyone,

With all best wishes, stay well and safe!
Mr Grady

Safeguarding ALERT – Dangerous Chat Rooms

We have been alerted to dangerous activities happening in chat rooms. Following concerns from parents and safeguarding professionals.

Last year schools across the UK were warned about a well-known chat room. Some schools issued warnings to parents and carers urging them to talk to their children about these types of platforms.

Content from Chat rooms is now being shared by popular influencers which could encourage young people to visit these platforms. We’re aware of instances where popular influencers are livestreaming reaction videos of them using the platform.

What are anonymous chat rooms?

Anonymous chat rooms are online spaces where people can chat with strangers. People can communicate via instant messaging and video chat, some of these platforms use random matching to pair users.

Young people are likely to use these chat rooms and chat room apps because they seem fun, and the randomisation of people can be exciting.

As young people spend much more time online due to ongoing restrictions, there is an increased chance that they will come across these sites.

We’re aware of content from Chat rooms being shared widely across other platforms with trending hashtags, which could drive even more traffic. Despite young people seeing platforms like these as fun, they may not see the risks from those online with malicious intentions.

What are the risks?

  • Young people are at risk of seeing distressing or highly sexualised imagery without warning
  • They may be asked or pressured to remove clothing or reveal personal information
  • They may be asked to have private conversations on other apps or platforms
  • They may also be sent malicious links or spam

Students should avoid using chat rooms and speak to an adult at school if they want to discuss anything that is worrying them.

Students must never send personal details to strangers or over chat rooms.

If you would like to discuss this further then please contact me via email S.quinn@rugbyhighschool.co.uk

With best wishes
Mr Quinn

Reminder to Students:

Please only use your school email address to sign up to educational platforms and sites, otherwise, you may receive Spam and junk mail to your school account.

With best wishes

RHS VS ASHLAWN - TUESDAY 25TH JAN

On Tuesday night we welcomed Ashlawn for our second netball fixture. We played amazing throughout and showed great team work. With a brilliant defence, great interceptions and passes from the centre and some flawless shooting saw us win comfortably at 24-0. A privilege to be part of a strong and successful team. Well done girls.

RHS VS AVON VALLEY - WEDS 26TH JAN

It was a little harder for our team tonight as Avon Valley brought some tough competition but luckily, due to our great teamwork and spacing, we managed to score lots of goals, with the overall score being 10-1 to RHS! Sofia said "The game was close and our opponents played well but we came out on top, well done everyone ". Poppy said " A tougher game tonight but we held our own and played well as a team. Well played everyone". The player of the match was Ivy Cooke. Thank you to all our supporters, our umpires and teachers, and all the people playing. What a great match!

My Hobbies/interests: During the past couple of years, I have really enjoyed running. I never thought I would utter those words, but there we go! I also, love playing the keyboard and being creative in that regard.

My favourite music to relax to: I would probably say, Laura Marling. She is my go-to artist in most cases. I've seen her perform live 5 times and she's always been fabulous!

My favourite music to clean to: I love listening to The Weekend or Dua Lipa or The Arctic Monkeys to give me the energy and motivation to clean the house. They would also, be my first choice before going on a night out.

I would most like to have to dinner:  My Nan as she passed away while I was training to become a teacher and I would love to tell her the stories of the various adventures I've had. Also, Charles II as he seems like a good laugh!

A fun fact: I was living in Leicester during the year in which the men's football team, miraculously, won the Premiership. There were great feelings of joy and celebration which washed over the city and it was impossible, even as a lifelong Walsall fan, to not be swept up in it. To see Kasabian play in an impromptu concert following the open bus parade will always live long in the memory.

Snow
by Edward Thomas

In the gloom of whiteness,
In the great silence of snow,
A child was sighing
And bitterly saying: “Oh,
They have killed a white bird up there on her nest,
The down is fluttering from her breast.”
And still it fell through that dusky brightness
On the child crying for the bird of the snow.
