Rugby High School - Autumn 2021 Issue 9

News from Mr Grady

Hello everyone,

It does feel like some time since I last wrote to you, and indeed a lot can happen in a fortnight!  It has left me wondering exactly what I could write about, as there are so many school-based things that are now up and running, that I have wealth of opportunities to choose from. (Alright – “from which to choose” if we’re being picky about grammar.)

Last week we had the first of our Sixth Form Open Evenings, as a chance for Year 11 students to come and see what we offer at RHS, and to encourage them to join us for their A-Level Study.  We have the second one of these tonight.  It has been a herculean task on behalf of the Sixth Form Team, Mrs Danger and curriculum leaders in organising this, so it could be safe for all to attend, but very much something we felt we had to do!

It has felt like a very long time since we had students and parents in our hall (albeit distanced for safety) and moving around the school, with the very best of what we have to offer on show.

It gave me great pleasure to stand next to Mrs DB and our Senior Student Leadership Team and talk about what a wonderful, warm and kind place RHS is, and what a fantastic opportunity it is to join us for that crucial next step between GCSEs and “the real world.”  Visitors were hugely impressed with the passion of our teachers and the presentations they gave, their knowledge, their insight and their understanding of just how to get the very best out of all our students.

But most importantly, students and parents were most vocal about how impressed they were by our own students, who spoke with confident voices, erudite, perceptive and mature, our students were outstanding advocates for everything we do here at RHS.

I cannot tell you what a joy it was to see our school opened up once again, and to welcome our community, and potential students.  It felt like very nearly a normal thing happening at a normal time, and goodness me we’ve all needed a bit of that recently.

For those of you coming to this evening’s Open Evening, I hope you have a similar experience.  I am so very proud of our staff, students and the RHS vision and ethos, and I look forward to sharing that with all our students tonight and in the coming weeks,

With all best wishes, stay well and safe!
Mr Grady

Parental Contact and Availability

During the school day, we may need to contact a parent or carer in relation to their child’s health, wellbeing or safety.  In the past few weeks we have had occasions where we have had urgent need to contact a parent or carer for their child to be collected from school, and in several instances have been unable to make contact with any of the contacts shared with us, or been unable to get a parent or approved adult to collect their child within an hour of our request.

It is imperative that we can contact parents, or approved contacts that have been shared with us during the school day, and it is vital that if a child needs to be collected from school that an adult can be with us within an hour of our message reaching them.  I fully understand that parents and carers may be at work, or at a distance from the school, but we are eager to work with you so that an appropriate adult can collect your child as soon as possible once we’ve made a request to do so, for their safeguarding and wellbeing.

Thanks in advance for supporting us with this,
Mr Grady

Pastoral Support in School

Currently, our pastoral team is undergoing several unavoidable staff absences, and so they are currently very stretched.  Normally we would aim to respond as quickly as possible, and broadly within 48 hours of initial contact.  Please do be patient as we work through parental and student queries.  We will get to everyone, but it may well be slightly longer than 48 hours for any non-urgent/ non-safeguarding queries.  Where possible if your query is a minor/organisational one, then contacting your child’s form tutor in the first instance will be most effective.

Thank you
Mr Grady

With the holidays fast approaching we wanted to remind you that when you are shopping online to consider shopping through Easyfundraising or Amazon Smile.  Both services allow the PTA to claim extra funds when you make purchases at no extra cost to you.

• Support us by shopping through Easyfundraising:
https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/rugbyhighschool/

• Or support us through smile.amazon.co.uk
https://smile.amazon.co.uk/ch/1096030-0

Every little bit helps and the funds raised by the PTA goes straight back into school to provide those extras that help round out the experiences of out students.

Thank you!

Member of staff or in Year 9-12?
Want to star gaze?

The Physics Department has a telescope along with a tripod and various accessories to lend out. It is available for any member of staff or student (not just Physics students)

You can borrow the equipment over several weeks and the instruction manual can be found online. Anyone who is interested should see Mrs Mighall (mighalls@rugbyhighschool.co.uk) in the Physics department.

Please note that a car is essential for transporting the telescope to and from home as the box is rather large and heavy.

What are your hobbies/interests?

I have two hobbies that keep me busy when I’m not in school photocopying resources for your teachers.  I really love to dabble in mixed media art which includes collage and acrylic painting.  Some of it I have framed and other pieces I’ve used to create cards.  I also love photography and I am currently doing challenge in which I am taking pictures based on a theme each week.  It’s a really good motivator to get the camera out and see the world from a different angle.

What is your favourite music to a) relax to? b) to clean to?  (for the non-cleaners amongst you - music that energises you).

I really like Indie bands, such as The Lumineers, Mumford & Sons, and Tame Impala.

What has been your favourite holiday destination?

I haven’t done much global travel, but I have travelled across Canada quite a bit and love how vastly different it is from coast to coast.  I spent 3 years living in Northern Ontario and it was magical to see the Northern Lights on a regular basis.

Who would you most like to have to dinner - dead or alive?

I would love to have dinner with my Dad.  He passed away many years ago and I’d love the chance to catch him up on all my news.

A Fun Fact about you!

Being from Canada I have some interesting favourite foods, including a traditional dish from Quebec called Poutine.  It is essentially chips served with lashings of cheese and gravy! Yum!!
