Rugby High School - Autumn 2019 Issue 8

News from Mr Grady

Hello everyone.  I hope that the half term break did exactly what it should have done: Given a chance for a rest and a recharge ahead of the Christmas-side of this term.

We finished last half term on a real high, the whole school out on the field, completing the Race for Life.  This is now a biannual event, so neither Years 7 or 8 had had chance to have a go, nor our joiners in Year 12 or 13.  Despite the rain, and underfoot conditions we stuck at it, and in true RHS fashion over 800 students and staff completed the five-kilometre course, the fastest in just under 24 minutes!

What struck me forcefully as I panted around the course in my pink vest was the good-humour and camaraderie of everyone taking part.  It didn’t matter about the speed or how athletic we were it was the fact that we were all together taking part in a shared activity for the benefit of others.  No wonder we were all having such a good time.

When we talk about the ethos of Rugby High School, it is perhaps sometimes difficult to imagine what it looks like in practice.  I can assure you, that had you seen us running, jogging and walking in what at times felt like driving rain, you would have understood what it was to be a member of our community.  It was wonderful to see so many students finish the course, but then continue supporting those students and staff yet to finish.

As we move onwards through the term, as the going gets a little more difficult underfoot, I’d remind everyone that it was as a community that we achieved such a wonderful thing in completing the Race for Life.  There may have been someone coming first or someone bringing up the rear, but actually what matters is that we did it together, and, as a result achieved something more than anyone of us could have managed on our own.

Best wishes,

Mr Grady

Cool to Be Kind Week, 11th – 15th November

Rugby High School’s ‘Cool to Be Kind Week’ encourages students and staff to put others first, perform kind and thoughtful acts, help each other, work together and celebrate friendship. Across the week there will be a range of events taking place and we will also promote national ‘Anti-Bullying Week’ whose message this year is’ Change Starts With Us’.

‘Whether it is verbal, physical, online or in-person, bullying has a significant impact on a child’s life well in to adulthood. By making small, simple changes, we can break this cycle and create a safe environment for everyone. Because together, we can challenge bullying. Change starts with a conversation. It starts with checking in. It starts with work together. Change starts here. Change starts now. Change starts with us.’

We encourage students to participate in national Odd Socks Day on Tuesday 12th November to help raise awareness of bullying. It is also an opportunity to express themselves and celebrate their individuality.  Students should attend in their usual school uniform with the addition of mismatched socks. Any voluntary donations received will be sent to the Anti-bullying Alliance to support the work they do with young people.

KS3 Book Recommendation

When a creature dies, its spirit can go looking for somewhere to hide.

Some people have space inside them, perfect for hiding.

Makepeace, a courageous girl with a mysterious past, defends herself nightly from the ghosts which try to possess her. Then a dreadful event causes her to drop her guard for a moment.

And now there's a ghost inside her.

The spirit is wild, brutish and strong, but it may be her only defence in a time of dark suspicion and fear. As the English Civil War erupts, Makepeace must decide which is worse: possession – or death.
