Rugby High School - Autumn 2021 Issue 5

News from Mr Grady

Hello everyone,

Last Friday we celebrated the cultural diversity of the Rugby High School Community with Rugby High School’s Cultural Diversity Day.  Although it was one day, I have to say, it honestly felt like part of a far larger conversation about the wonderful diversity of cultures and experiences we have at Rugby High School.  If you didn’t know, and haven’t had chance to see the pictures, we encouraged students to come to school in national dress, clothing that represented their culture, or the colours of their national flag.  Our students (and staff!) did not disappoint.

I have to say, this was one of the best days I’ve had in school for several years – the sheer array of nationalities and cultures represented and shared was amazing, the board where we shared greeting in all the languages spoken in our community filled up with more and more phrases and greetings, and the lunchtime celebration of music and dance, led by the sixth form prefects was an absolute joy to behold.

This newsletter is far too short to capture the vivacity and the joy that the day created – I have rarely seen so many students smiling all in one day!!

And I hope, as I said at the start of this, that this celebration of our cultural diversity will not remain singled out on a “day” but is part of our ongoing conversations with students, staff and families as to how we make sure everyone’s voice is heard and celebrated across the school year and throughout the curriculum – I’m looking forward for instance for the different ways in which we’ll be marking and celebrating Black History Month – the different informative posters up around school already, and the events planned should be a wonderful addition to October for all our students.

What a great day it was, and I cannot wait for more opportunities to continue to celebrate the diversity of cultures at Rugby High School!

With all best wishes, stay well and safe!
Mr Grady

Students and staff were invited by the Diversity Prefect team  to come to school on our first ever annual Diversity Day dressed in either their traditional cultural dress, or the colour of their flags.

Rania Jhumka and Dhruvika Talati in Year 13 commented how the school was full of colour everywhere and how much students seemed to enjoy seeing  the different clothing and jewellery from other cultures.

Students spent form time asking each other questions about their culture and finding out about each others’ customs.

There were cultural performances at lunch time in the music centre before a packed audience of students .  Abi Westgate, one of the diversity prefects, said that she loved the fact that everyone felt comfortable to come in and express themselves in their culture. “It was really special to see students wanting to learn from and listen to each other.  I am so glad we got to do it.”

PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION – AGM
Monday, October 11th at 6:30pm in the Main Hall

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The PTA would like to invite you to join them at our Annual General meeting in October.

We will be meeting in a socially distanced way in the Main Hall of the school with tea and coffee. The meeting will give you a chance to meet other parents and see what the PTA is all about.

We are a passionate group of parents supported by staff who look to raise funds in a fun and sociable way. The extra funding we raise goes directly to equipment and resources to enhance your child’s educational experience. In the last year, for example, we have paid for yoga lessons for pupils, bought ukuleles for the Music Department and funded new equipment for Duke of Edinburgh award expeditions.

All parents and carers are warmly invited to attend the PTA's Annual General Meeting on Monday, October 11th at 6:30pm in the Main Hall.

If you wish to get more information about the PTA, please contact us at rhspta@rugbyhighschool.co.uk

PTA 200 Club
Raising Funds to Benefit the School Community

Rugby High School PTA runs a members' lottery, called the 200 Club, to raise funds for the benefit of all students in school. It is a good way to make a contribution to the PTA to fund those 'little extras' for the students over their time at the school.
Last year the PTA helped with the purchase of water fountains to be placed around the school, sports day badges, 'Poetry Slam' and extra equipment for the Science Department, to name but a few.

Buy a share for £12 and you'll be entered into every draw for a year. That's a chance to win a total of 40 cash prizes. The more shares you buy the greater the chance of winning!

Half of all the money raised goes to the school fund and the other half is distributed as prizes. It is open to parents, guardians, staff and friends of the school.

To take part, please download an entry form or fill in the online form & good luck!

Best wishes
Erica Milwain, 200 Club Organiser

What are your hobbies/interests?
Space, baking, fossil hunting (I've still only found 1 fossil!)

What is your favourite music to
a) relax to?

Taylor Swift/Ed Sheeran
b) to clean to?  The Bleachers

What has been your favourite holiday destination?
Cromer is my favourite holiday destination because it is a real old-fashioned English seaside resort, with amazing views and friendly people.  An afternoon spent on the beach or crabbing off the pier makes you forget your worries.

Who would you most like to have to dinner?
I would choose Terry Wogan as my dinner date as he kept me company on breakfast radio for many years, bringing many a laugh to a dismal drive to work.  I still miss not hearing him on Radio 2.

A Fun Fact about you!
I lived in Australia and the UAE.
