Rugby High School - Autumn 2021 Issue 3

News from Mr Grady

Hello everyone,

Last Friday I attended Badminton Club.  Dr Carr and myself will be running this club for Year 10 and 11 students every Friday, restrictions permitting, and it was such a joy to see so many students last Friday clearly eager to have a decent game, be healthy and fit, and use their lunchtime more positively than huddling in “bubble classrooms” like they have had to do for so long.

I’m sure you can imagine, I am slightly more cut out for non-contact sports, and the good thing about Badminton Club is that I am able to draw on my extensive experience of Badminton, as (and I say this proudly) I was captain of my Primary School Badminton Team.  Yes, when I was 10, I captained the St Mary’s Badminton team to a fantastic second place behind St Thomas More in the Coventry Primary School competition.  I think I still have the badge somewhere.

Obviously, some 35 years later, I am slightly rusty, but what was fantastic was the positive approach the students in years 10 and 11 took in responding to our advice and attempts at coaching, but more importantly what was delightful was watching how our students themselves led the sessions, organised games and even more pleasingly coached each other with advice guidance and warmth, making this a lovely lunchtime session.

In fact, and I hope this is reassuring to all, what I felt more than anything as I joined the club was a feeling of being a bit daunted:  The students were confident, erudite and clearly capable of leading the session.  They understood how to support each other, and, being on their home turf, as it were, were entirely comfortable in organising games and getting a rota up and running efficiently and effectively.  I was left, at one point asking “can I play?” of one very generous group of students, and despite being a 45-year-old head teacher, remembered clearly what it was like to be “the new person” in the room, or situation, and how isolating that can feel.

We can all feel like that sometimes, particularly when a group seems to be confident and competent, but it would help us all to remember what it’s like to be the person on the outside of that, and as we’re starting a new school year, starting new things at lunch and after school, we could all do well to look out for that person on the outside looking in.

It’s easy to forget what it felt like, but a warm smile, and an invitation to join in must be one the kindest things we can do for members of our community to make them feel involved and part of something bigger and better.  We will all benefit from that.

With all best wishes, stay well and safe!
Mr Grady

New House Names
At the end of the previous year, it was decided that we wanted to rejuvenate the house system to reflect the diversity of our school community and reconnect it with the students. Consequently, the students were asked to nominate illustrious individuals who they believed would represent them best. Fo...

PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION – AGM
Monday, October 11th at 6:30pm in the Main Hall

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The PTA would like to invite you to join them at our Annual General meeting in October.

We will be meeting in a socially distanced way in the Main Hall of the school with tea and coffee. The meeting will give you a chance to meet other parents and see what the PTA is all about.

We are a passionate group of parents supported by staff who look to raise funds in a fun and sociable way. The extra funding we raise goes directly to equipment and resources to enhance your child’s educational experience. In the last year, for example, we have paid for yoga lessons for pupils, bought ukuleles for the Music Department and funded new equipment for Duke of Edinburgh award expeditions.

All parents and carers are warmly invited to attend the PTA's Annual General Meeting on Monday, October 11th at 6:30pm in the Main Hall.

If you wish to get more information about the PTA, please contact us at rhspta@rugbyhighschool.co.uk

PTA 200 Club
Raising Funds to Benefit the School Community

Rugby High School PTA runs a members' lottery, called the 200 Club, to raise funds for the benefit of all students in school. It is a good way to make a contribution to the PTA to fund those 'little extras' for the students over their time at the school.
Last year the PTA helped with the purchase of water fountains to be placed around the school, sports day badges, 'Poetry Slam' and extra equipment for the Science Department, to name but a few.

Buy a share for £12 and you'll be entered into every draw for a year. That's a chance to win a total of 40 cash prizes. The more shares you buy the greater the chance of winning!

Half of all the money raised goes to the school fund and the other half is distributed as prizes. It is open to parents, guardians, staff and friends of the school.

To take part, please download an entry form & good luck!

Best wishes
Erica Milwain, 200 Club Organiser

EXTRA-CURRICULAR SPORT IS BACK!!!

Finally, we have been able to get the extra-curricular sports programme back up and running, and it seems it has been missed by students more than we realised!

The turnout every day, for the different clubs on offer, has been amazing...if not a little over-whelming for the member of staff running it, as we have been swamped by attendees...but it has been brilliant. We even have staff from 6 other departments helping to run clubs this year, which has enabled us to offer more, and we can't thank them enough for their enthusiasm and time.

This half term we have clubs in Netball, Badminton, Basketball, Running, Football and Yoga. Also, for the first time since 2019, we have actual fixtures against other schools starting too. HOORAY!!! Therefore, good luck to all those representing RHS in year 8-11 netball over the next 5 weeks. We are so happy to be back and hope the students continue to appreciate, and revel, in the opportunity to do something at lunchtime again, and to mix with their peers.

Dear all,

You may or may not be aware that the UK is hosting an important conference on climate change in November (known as COP26).

The International Development Committee (a group of MPs in the House of Commons) are looking to find out what young people think about climate change, and how you think it will affect you and the wider world. They are conducting a survey to collect your views.

Most of you will not be able to vote yet so this is a great opportunity to help influence how our Parliament react to climate change and I would urge you to take a couple of minutes to fill the survey out. The link to the survey is: https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=nt3mHDeziEC-Xo277ASzSugWXtlS9G1OpuyhNtc2h8lUMkZFWExLTkYxMjQyMkQzOFVBRVJGVUdSTiQlQCN0PWcu

The deadline to complete the survey is 5pm on the 1st October.

Kind regards,
Mrs Price
Head of History and Politics
