TEXTILES AT RUGBY HIGH SCHOOL

Studying textiles will develop an aesthetic awareness of decorative qualities, surface pattern, colour and texture that permeate the world in which we live. It enables the students to develop transferable attributes, imaginative thinking, problem solving and fine motor skills

Students are challenged to feel energised and enthused so that they can explore their ideas via a challenging and creative curriculum. They can pursue their passion for fashion and surface design and jewellery both as a designer and a maker.

Each project builds towards covering a diverse range of techniques and the opportunity to develop and refine practical skills. Students are encouraged to interpret their own designs in a diverse range of materials and threads to create an exciting range of outcomes. General processes include hand and machine embroidery, wet and dry needle felting, soft sculpture, wirework, quilting, beading, applique and silk screen printing.

Critical studies play an important role in the study and production of Art Textiles and students are encouraged to refer to and appraise opinions of works of art and textiles which further serve to inform and inspire. Visits to museums and galleries are undertaken and students are encouraged to participate in exhibitions and competitions.

At the end of year 9, students have the option of continuing with Art Textiles through to GCSE level following the OCR examination syllabus. The course seeks to foster independent thought, encouraging pupils to be curious, aware and open to experimentation, whilst developing both their imagination, contextual knowledge, observation and practical skills.

Students can continue their Textiles education as they enter the Sixth Form by opting to enter for the OCR A Level Textiles endorsement.
